Was there ever a time when you went to see a play on Broadway and when the house lights went up for intermission you couldn't wait was was going to happen next?
I couldn't wait for the second act of Millie because I really was curious about Jimmy kissing Miss. Dorthey.
What about you guys?
I think the curtain line in Act 1 of Proof is an absolute zinger.
Wicked4Lyfe before I even read your response I was going to say Millie--that truly is a Cliff Hanger.
I don't know if this is a Cliff Hanger, but the Act I Finale of Ragtime always got to me. I couldnt wait to see what was going to happen next
i agree about Ragtime. Sweeney Tood is no slouch either.

Guys and Dolls: I was like damn! Everything was going so good with u two, now just because of one stupid crap game u both are mad at each other!
If I hadnt heard it already, I would have said Wicked, but everyone had told me what happens so I was like...great
Before I saw the movie Chicago, I went to see the show. When she all of a sudden said "Im having a baby", the audience was like "what?!" It was really funny. I was a bit confused though so I wanted to see the 2nd Act.
Carousel
I agree with popcultureboy....I have never heard an entire theatre gasp like I did at the end of the 1st act of Proof.

First time that I saw les miserables in london (too many years ago)... that 15 minutes of pause were like a hell!
Don't know if I should give it away...it was that suprising!
Exactly! We can't spoil it here, it's a cliffhanger. Although the play is available to buy so I recommend reading it.
When i left ave q during intermission. it was a great cliff hanger but i dont wanna know what happened anyway...something about puppets having rabid sex...didnt interest me very much...
For me the ULTIMATE Broadway cliffhanger was when the first installment of Angels In America when the Angel came crashing through the ceiling over Prior during his dream...Millineum Approaches, and then waiting MONTHS for Perestroika!
Will we know where the end of Act 1 is when we see the movie?
going to have to agree with Once a month. That is a true cliffhanger. Such a great show. Kushner is brilliant.
Governor: I don't think so. Act Two opens with a flashback and then Act Two Scene Two carries on directly from where the curtain line left off. So it might be a little harder to discern.

Also Gypsy. You dont know what to expect. The show leaves you with "Everythings Coming Up Roses". Its such a powerful song and it really lets you see Mama Rose's character. The show I saw, the song ended and all you hear is the train coming in the backround and the curtain came down. It was just so silent. The audience was in awe. It was in the 1990 revival with Linda Lavin.
Oh yeah, forgot about that Gypsy song. A really pull-put the stops, raise the roof song.
gotta say it: Parade and Floyd Collins.
Parade: Act 1 ends with Leo getting convicted of the murder & rape.
Floyd: Homer has finally reached Floyd in hopes of rescuing him from the cave.

Not exactly a Cliff hanger, but this made me laugh- I went to see ITW with the whole family, and after the Act 1 curtain, they gave me a strange look, and a bunch of families around us were like "Wait, that was a short show. Is it over?"
They didn't read their Playbill, I guess...I wouldn't be surprised if a few of them had walked out.

don't kill me!! wicked. *waits for the boos and hisses* i just wanted to know what would happen afterwards.
oh! fiddler on the roof as well. the end of act 1 completely shocked me. i was in tears. i was sitting there like 'omg how could they do that!'
Millie. The second time I saw it was with my husband. At intermission, he turned to me with the most devastated and confused look on his face. I made him sweat it out, though, just as I had the first time I saw it.
O/T question, but I need to know: how does the first act of Ave Q end? I'm totally blanking right now, and it's really painful...

Doesn't it end with "Fine, Fine Line?"
I really have no idea. I totally forget.
The end of Angels In America: Millenium Approaches is beautifully and perfectly cliffhanger-esque.

I was going to say Fiddler on the Roof. Just because it leaves on such a down note that you want to know how Tevye is going to deal with it all. When he turns to look up at God after the little demonstration, that is such a powerful moment because he feels so betrayed by a friend, and his world is slowly drifting away...almost a King Lear moment.
