Oh my, I too had such trouble finding a copy without horrendous scratching and surface noise. I still have several copies that are nearly unlistenable.
Didn't Sondheim once say that the RNT production made the Glamorous Life and My Husband The Pig changes/additions without his permission? And didn't he also bar the production from transferring?
At the time there were all sorts of rumours about Sondheim disliking aspects of the RNT production. I remember enquiring about a cast recording when I saw the show and was told, by the theatre shop staff, that a recording had been made but for some reason Sondheim was holding everything up as he didn't like it! I was told that if it was released it would probably be an 'in-house' exclusive. I believe it did become an exclusive when it was made available for sale but was then given a limited release nationwide.
Nothing much to contribute, but I am currently obsessed with Audra's version of "The Glamorous Life," I listen to it like once a day, it's simply brilliantly sung and I love the lyrics.
The NT cd has Dench and the "Glamourous Life" version much discussed above. Otherwise, it's not as moving or thrilling as the OBC, at least to me. Still, Dench's presence and her "Clowns" make it a pretty important recording.
I own EVERY recording of ALNM, my favorite of all time, and nothing beats the OBC!!!
It would have been nice if the New York City Opera were able to do a recording of their famed production. Hermione Gringold is hard to beat, but Regina Resnik was able to do it!!!
