Even though the show wasn't great, I really think 9 to 5's album was one of the best put together cast recordings this year. It really gives you a sense of the show, and there are people out there who did like the music.
I really didn't like WSS's recording, I found it lifeless and the Spanish was more off putting on the CD than in the show for me.
That being said, my real vote goes towards Next to Normal or HAiR.

"It really gives you a sense of the show, and there are people out there who did like the music."
Based on the responses in this thread, you can say the same thing for Hair, Next to Normal and/or West Side Story, so I wouldn't consider that a distinguishing factor for 9 to 5.

Well, of course, I hope Rock of Ages wins.
The 80's are in right now. The songs are classics.
The entire cast did a great job. The cd is well produced.

Posted: 9/27/09 at 9:24amI am pretty sure that Next to Normal will win this. This album has some of the best music from a musical and it is really well produced. The whole cast is great on the album and the album really helps showcase how amazing the show is.

Posted: 9/27/09 at 10:43amMillie, I wasn't using people's love for the music as a distinguishing factor, and my vote did go to n2n or HAiR, I was just emphasizing that although most people (here anyway) didn't like the show, the quality of the recording was stellar and I hope it's recognized for that.

I would like to see 9 to 5 or Next to Normal win! I doubt it though. Rock of ages has a more likely chance because of Constantine. The chance of 13 winning over any of the other CD's is very limited. I hope Stephanie J Block's CD gets nominated!! She really deserves it and the CD is just BEAUTIFUL! And if Stephanie doesn't win all hopes are on Liza! :)

Posted: 9/27/09 at 11:34amIt seems to me that many of the posters are forgetting that the Grammy does not go, or should not necessarily go, to the year's Best Musical or to the show you liked the best. Nor even necessarily to the Musical with the Best Score. Isn't it supposed to go to the Best Produced/Best Engineered Cast Album? One thing I have always wished is that the Tony for Best New Score would be voted on by people who actually know something about the craft of writing a musical score. You might get a very different slate of nominees some years. Of course you can say this for any category in the Tony voting, but I would have more respect for the result if the voters were musically knowledgeable. I predict Hair.

Rock Of Ages should absolutely be nominated. Not only is it an incredibly well-produced album (produced by the guy who did Guns & Roses "Appetite For Distruction") but Grammy voters (not musical theater fanatics) will appreciate the skill that went into creating medleys out of these songs. I would argue that this took more skill and creativity than simply rerecording Leonard Bernstein's score.
Really? Are you two being serious?
#37re: 'Best Musical Show Album' Grammy Nominations for 2009
Posted: 9/27/09 at 2:20pmI am 100% serious. Tell me how re-recording a score note for note that was written a long long time ago by someone who has nothing to do with this current production takes more skill and creativity than what was created for ROA today? Your only argument is based on theater geek snobbery not on a real assessment of the work being done on these ALBUMS. This is a Grammy thread. I'm not saying ROA is a better show than WWS or Hair, but rather the achievements of this CURRENT OCR put that album in the same league with these CURRENT ALBUMS... That is how Grammy voters vote not based on how popular the show is with the broadway message board crowd.

Posted: 9/27/09 at 2:27pmSo the re-recording of trashy 80's hits takes more skill & creativity than re-recording the scores of HAiR & WSS?

ROA's songs weren't just re-recorded. In many cases, these songs were cleverly constructed into medleys consisting of multiple "trashy 80s songs." There was clever work done by the CURRENT creators to turn these pop songs into showtunes that move the story. So yeah... For 2009, ROA deserves to be in the mix just as much as WWS or HAIR (both straight re-recordings of brilliant PAST scores)
Again, your argument is simply theater nerd snobbery not on the work of these ALBUMS.
And why the James Carpinello avatar if your such a hater? Or is that just man lust?
#40re: 'Best Musical Show Album' Grammy Nominations for 2009
Posted: 9/27/09 at 2:49pmI thought the point of this Grammy was not the quality of what was recorded, but the quality of the recording itself. So why does it matter if you think the songs of Rock of Ages suck? If it's a well engineered album, then it should win.

Lust and protest. The mods kept deleting my avatar of a shirtless guy & Millie suggested I use one of BWW shirtless pictures.
