Best Overtures

I'm sure this post has been up many many times. But I just love the overtures to

1. POTO
2. The Producers
3. Gypsy
4. Dance of the Vampires
5. South Pacific
"Have a child for warmth and a baker for bread and a prince for... whatever!"

re: Best Overtures

Gypsy...Gypsy...Gypsy...Did I mention Gypsy?

re: Best Overtures

Definitely my favorite overtures are to Thoroughly Modern Millie and Merrily We Roll Along
"And I feel it move me Like a fire deep inside Something bursting me wide open Impossible to hide And suddenly I'm flying Flying like a bird Like electricity Electricity" - Electricity from Billy Elliot The Musical

re: Best Overtures

I agree Gypsy is the best musical show overture. Judy Garland's Carnegie Hall overture is the best non-musical show overture.

re: Best Overtures

Yes, GYPSY is the best.

I also love:

Brigadoon
South Pacific
The King and I
Carousel (Waltz)
Nine (sung)

Here are my favorites:

1. Carousel (it's so classic)
2. Kiss Me Kate
3. POTO (although i'm not a fan of the show, the intro is real good)
4. Gypsy
5. On the Town

I have more, but I can't think of them right now

re: Best Overtures

Merrily has a great overture! I don't know why we didn't do it when we did it.
Also I think Chicago has a great one too!
"Have a child for warmth and a baker for bread and a prince for... whatever!"

The overture to CANDIDE is spectacular.

re: Best Overtures

Definately Gypsy!

I also like the overture to The Producers.
A little swash, a bit of buckle - you'll love it more than bread.

re: Best Overtures

The "Nine" overture is the most original!

The towel waving reminded me of a Per?nist rally. I kept chanting "Evita!" whenever they'd pan to the crowds. - SM2

re: Best Overtures

I think Funny Girl has a great overture as well, but it is often overshadowed by Gypsy. I also love the Prologue to Carousel. Not really an overture, but a great show opener nonetheless.
Pass it on - Take a kid to a show.
