Marquise,
you are so right about PROMISES, PROMISES. A great overture! I believe it is the first Broadway overture to use pit singers. :)

I just saw Miss Saigon for the first time this weekend. The overture to that is absolutely amazing.

I have to say the 'Carousel' overture is beautiful, when it's done properly...

candide. especially the ending, where it goes pianissimo, then the last chord bursts out fortissimo. I love it.
And phantom, even if it does sound pretty 80s.

Put me in for GYPSY! WOW! They don't get any better than that folks. At Bernadette & Co.'s final performance the Overature got a standing ovation, instantly - simply breathtaking!

My favorites are:
1. MACK AND MABEL (Nicer orchestrations on 1995 London Cast cd)
2. LITTLE ME (Original BW cast-Sid Caesar-AWESOME overture)
3. MAME
4. THE SOUND OF MUSIC (movie overture)
5. FLOWER DRUM SONG (original Broadway cast, not revival)
Others I really enjoy are ROTHCHILDS, THE GRAND TOUR, LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, DEAR WORLD, GYPSY,JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, ROAR OF THE GREASEPAINT and especially, though not Broadway, Jerry Herman's MRS. SANTA CLAUSE, an awesome 6 minute overture beautifully done that's on the cd, but not in the tv version.

It's sad that overtures are getting less popular because I love them. Maybe it's because so many people talk through them. Anyway, I like Phantom, Wicked (not really technically an overture), West Side Story, and Chicago.
I've never heard Gypsy's so I'm obviously missing out quite a bit. I've gotta go find that.

Mamma Mia, just cause of the enormous scare it gives you. It's not really the best, my vote would go to POTO but MM is fun

Candide by a thousand million miles.
Then Gypsy.
The a thousand million light years to the rest.
I've never been fond of Merrily, actually- I find the transition into "Good Thing Going" clumsy. Sorry.
