The tap number from Seesaw is officially called "Chapter 54, Number 1909" but was nicknamed "Late Great State of New York".
I'd vote for "Who's That Woman?" from Follies as greatest tap number, closely rivaled by "I Want to Be Happy" from No, No, Nanette.

cm2, the number from SEESAW has the memorable title of "Chapter 54, Number 1909".
"The Production Code" from A DAY IN HOLLYWOOD, A NIGHT IN THE UKRAINE is cute.
And I enjoy the tap/ballet duel in ON YOUR TOES.

forget about the boy.
that is the only one from something other than 42nd street that I can think of.

Posted: 6/15/05 at 11:48am"I Wanna Be A Producer" makes my jaw drop every time. I know there are probably better numbers, but it's my favorite (that I can think of at the moment).

Posted: 6/15/05 at 12:07pmThanks for the clarification of that Seesaw number. I keep meaning to buy that OCR. I loved that show and wish I had seen the original. Impossible, considering my age.

MTRBOI24,
I'm not and I love that Fred number!! I also enjoyed his number with the sand from an ashcan in ....Top Hat, I think? The one where he initially wakes up Ginger with his energetic tapping, then switches to soft shoe to apologize!
I would have loved to have seen Jeff's show Change Partners! I have been craving some good old fashioned dancing for a long time, and Jeff's work in White Christmas fullfilled the craving...

re: Best Tap Number#43
Posted: 6/15/05 at 3:02pmMorosco -- you beat me to it . . . "Black and Blue" HANDS DOWN! I took tap from Savion Glover (who was just a kid then), Germaine Goodson, and Van Porter who were in that at the same time that I took from several more "traditional" stylists. I have to say, the "Black and Blue" tappers did stuff that is out of this world!!! Savion's classes were completely improvised and the man is a genius.

OH yeah, Throughly Modern Millie had great tap!
I didn't see it, but I can hear it on the OBCR.
I saw Producers on tour last week, and someguys were acting like they were tapping, but it was a percussionist making the sound in the pit when they "tapped". It was one of the male leads, maybe Leo I think. The ensemble really tapped though.
