For an individual, "I Can Do That" from A CHORUS LINE. But 42nd STREET and CRAZY FOR YOU are pretty hard to beat

Posted: 6/14/05 at 10:55pmI KNOW it's from the movie, but Ann Miller's rendition of "Too Darn Hot" is, well, too darn hot!

well from a movie musical its probably either the entire Babbit and the Bromide...or fred's number where he dances with the creaking noise in the floor and the news paper
If done right..."I can Do That"
And of course, anything from Bring in Da Noise, Bring in da funk.

The title song from "My One And Only", but you have to know the set-up.
Legendary tap dancer Charles "Honi" Coles plays a character who spends all of his Act I time sitting in a barber chair. In Act II, Tommy Tune comes to him for advice on how to woo Twiggy. Coles advises him to be cool and suave, so Tune tries that but winds up wildly tap dancing around the stage. Coles starts yelling "No, no, no!". Suddenly the music stops, Tune stops dancing and all is quiet until Coles mumbles, "Dear Lord, this boy's gonna make me have to come out of my chair." Coles steps down and dances a duet with Tune. Absolute magic.

I love the Aggie Song from Best Little Whorehouse...

The Aggie song from Whorehouse really isn't a tap number, it's a clog dance. It's not disimilar in style, just no metal taps on the shoes.

Posted: 6/15/05 at 1:53amAnything Goes has some great tap! And how can we forget Big Dollhouse from Hairspray! "Deposit your tap shoes on the way out!" or Urinetowns pseudo-tap "Snuff That Girl"
re: Best Tap Number#16
Posted: 6/15/05 at 2:42amI've got more votes for "I Can Do That" and the pseudotapping in "Snuff That Girl." And I'm going to break the rules, because I love the 42nd Street Opener - curtain half up on the feet is just too damn cool.

Posted: 6/15/05 at 2:50amI think the best tap number hands down belongs to Gregory Hines and the cast in "Thats How You Jazz" in "Jelly's Last Jam".....INCREDIBLE....and to hear it on the album is AMAZING!!!!!

Posted: 6/15/05 at 9:03amYou should've seen the ENCORES! production of Strike Up the Band with Philip Bosco, Lynn Redgrave, Judy Kuhn, David Elder, and Kristin Chenoweth (in one of her earlier roles). That had a lot of hot tapping in it (especially the title number.) Jeff Calhoun did the choreography for it and it was amazing. "The Old Gumbie Cat" number in Cats is not bad either.

That's one of the most wonderful moments! I remember that as if it were yesterday. They had the audience eating out of their hands. I loved My One and Only....very special and very entertaining!

I'll agree with "My One and Only". The duet between Mr. Coles and Tommy Tune was pure magic.
Also "Tap Your Troubles Away" from Mack and Mabel is fun to do.
re: Best Tap Number#22
Posted: 6/15/05 at 9:55amI know I love a delicious orgy of tapping. I second (or third?) Anything Goes. But Crazy For You and 42nd Street (We're in the Money, title song) are always the ones I think about when I think TAP!

Posted: 6/15/05 at 10:38amthe best tap number I ever saw was in a show called SEESAW. Can't remember the exact name of it, but the lead character was trying to learn New York law, by the rhythm of the taps. It was pretty phenomenal. And, it was a non-professional production.
