Good news? Maybe........ my high school decided to do the Wizard of Oz for our spring musical next year. I was curious, for anyone who has seen it or acted in it, what part, in your opinion, is the best for a girl? I am a strong singer and a good actress (I got the lead in this years musical), and I'd like to maybe get a few character descriptions from you guys. Personally, I'd love to be the Wicked Witch because of how much there is for you to do with the character, but some people swear that Dorothy is the best, hands down. Opinions??? I like to have fun on stage, and I'm thinking that the witch would be awesome to play!
I would have to say I feel that the Wizard himself is the best character...he is seen to be so frightful and powerful but he really is a very sweet and totally mis-represented character...plus in the movie hes kinda funny...Joel Grey in Wicked seems like a sweet man too.
I did this show this January. If you are doing the RSC version, the Wicked Witch does not sing. Your only singing options as a leading/ supporting female singer are Dorothy and Glinda.

I can't stand the MUNY version.. the RSC version is much better
Many directors as of late have opted to give "The Jitterbug" lead vocals to the Witch.. it all depends..
As for the most singing...definitely Dorothy. As for character...I went to my old high school last year and a girl played the scarecrow. She did a terrific job. There's so much character in that part, especially if you have comedic timing and a flexibility to do the dance. The witch would, of course, be fun to play.
the mayor of munchkin city, is my favorite.
Glinda or Dorothy
The Poopsmith, hands down.
Oh wait, Wizard of OZ character.
I'm a girl but I played the Scarecrow and it was one of the best musicals Ive ever done.
I played the Scarecrow in the RSC version and I think you should go for the Witch. It is a very fun part.
Well, as someone mentioned already, the witch does not sing; but personally, she's my favorite characte. It seems like such a fun part. My HS did The Wizard of Oz my senior year, and I'm still kicking myself for not auditioning. Not that I would have necessarily gotten the part of the witch; but I definitely would have wanted that part.

Lotta Thize (she's the bad girl in Oz)
Toto.
Because he is my dog's grandfather.
I am currently playing the Wicked Witch in a production of Wizard of Oz. It has been one of the greatest acting experiences I have had yet. True the witch does not sing, although I find it interesting some productions have given the vocals of the jitterbug to the witch I am going to talk to my director about this!! lol! However, I still find it a challenging and rewarding role even if not's testing my vocals. I feel the challenge comes from having to use your character work to find what's sympathetic about her because while the audience and other characters are supposed to dislike her and be afraid of her, you can't play it like you dislike her. Long story short I think what role you audition for and accept depends on what kind of acting challenge you want to undertake.
My school did the Wizard of Oz last year. I wasn't in the show, but I was heavily involved in the production. As you know, the only large female roles are Glinda, Dorothy and the Wicked Witch, and of course while Glinda has a wonderful entrance, it's relatively small as compared to the others. I'd say the Wicked Witch is the best (of course Wicked has made me a bit biased) acting-wise. She has so much more depth than Dorothy - but she doesn't sing. Dorothy is a much more flat, shallow character, but if it's really the singing that you're after I would go with her. If you want a deeper acting experience, try for the Witch.
i have always depended on the kindness of flying monkeys, m'self. but for a female part i'd say the witch would be the most fun. unless they'l let ya be a lioness, "if i were the queen of the forest!" oh wait that's an unnamed board member!
