I escaped the sexual harassment and irresponsible tax cut headlines yesterday and took my inner child to see Annie. It was such a treat to listen to such a great score and be reminded that hope and optimism actually feels good.
It also feels wonderful to experience the magic and craft that Beth Leavel brings to her performance of Miss Hannigan. She is such a showstopper. Worth the price of a ticket alone.
The sets and costumes were outstanding. Christopher Sieber (Warbucks) and Erin Mackey (Grace Farrell) were also terrific. I got to see Peyton Ella as Annie. My partner and I looked at each other as soon as she opened her mouth. Wow...what a set of pipes. It was as if Ethel Merman was reincarnated as Peyton Ella.
One of my pet peeves with Papermill audiences is that the applause is so lackluster. So yesterday I found the Bert Healy scenes ironic when the Applause signs are held during the taping of the radio show. Even with the visual cue we heard the same spattering of applause. Come on people!!! Wake up.
Definitely recommended.
