Ok so I saw Bette in rochester last night and I think I get the award for "only straight man under 30 not dragged by their wife and there of their own accord". Tottally worth it. She was hilarious, fresh, topical and didn't miss a beat. She kept up with the Harletts and at her age, which isn't that old, was still able to pull off Doris in all her fish glory. Did a hilarious montage of Broadway songs, all with fish themed lyrics, including her homage to POTO which saw her suspended from the fly loft on a giant fish line and hook.
She of course did the expected songs, wind beneath and from a distance. Dusted off some old as well as hit us with some new Sophie Tucker jokes. Very nice tributes to Mr. Rodgers and Rosemary Clooney were also included. I also loved the fact that her encore was a tribute to The Rose, which is by far my favorite Bette movie and Album. I tend to like her early stuff when she had more of a rock/janis edge. In the rose tribute she sang Keep on Rockin and closed with The Rose.
Only dissapointments, for me, were the fact that she didn't sing a full version of "Friends", She didn't do the Polynesian War Chant or Delta Dawn.
Surprises included the song Skylark, which I had forgotten about and Shiver Me Timbers, which I should have expected but didn't and on a side note both songs are very moving live.
If you get a chance go see KISS MY BRASS when in comes close to you, it's worth the money. Oh I almost forgot, she bashed Britney for not singing Live at her concerts and wondered where her credit from these modern day female singers was for paving the way to be able to wear pasties and a g-string in concert.
Waited for almost an hour after the show and got her autograph, but was pushed out of the way by some rude fans and a really strange tall man who kept assuring Bette that For the Boys was a classic on par with It's A Wonderful Life. Bette thanked him but told him the movie was crap. All I wanted to do was shake her hand and thank her and maybe get a kiss, but was practically knocked over by women my mother's age and older. Bette is funny though with some of her more pushy fans by rolling her eyes or giving odd looks to people who want her to sign a shirt. It's nice to note though that she looks the same in person as she does on tv and in the movies, no air brushing or camera tricks needed to make her look beautiful. Ok I'm rambling, that's it for now.
