What no one addresses is the adaptation itself -- which could be a significant issue in how well the whole cast performs in the film.
DREAMGIRLS was virtually all sung-through, with the Krieger recitatative one of the most powerful, artistically daring, aspects of the show. Recitative between soul, blues, and rock numbers--not the stuff of most musicals. The dialogue portions were brief, and the singing truly carried it. If that is approximated on film, all of the performances will be pre-recorded in the studio, yes? Then, I believe a Fantasia type -- a natural, instinctive performer, who hasn't worked with traditional dialgoue-dense scripts -- will have a shot at being shown to best advantage.
But my thought has zip to do with her illiteracy; it's all about her inexperience with performing dialogue, not "reading."

"As far as her deserving it, please! Save it. Unknowns don't have Clive Davis' henchmen campaigning for them to get the part. "
Trying to give Clive Davis credit for Fantasia's Audition Buzz? Are you serious? Clive Davis is MUSIC, while I'll admit he did have something to do with that success, (although she had terrible promotion and he should have done MUCH better by her musically) this acting thing has nothing to do with him, some have even said that he may be the reason she hasn't landed the part yet. Let's be honest, if she wasn't one of the best she would have auditioned and disappeared like Latoya London and Jennifer Hudson as well as many of well known people who've auditioned and there is nothing that Clive Davis or anyone could have said.
Futhermore, I haven't heard a peep out of clive davis regarding fantasia. He may be hoping that she doesn't land this role becuase if she does --- it may be possible the he loses her. The only celebs that I've heard talking about her are Jamiee Foxx and Beyonce and IMO their push would be far more helpful then anything Clive Davis could say or do because they are in the movie and have likely seen many audition tapes of these unknowns that you swear aren't getting a fair shot when they are because they have gone around the country and even you admitted that they are STILL looking for their unknown. I swear some people act as if Clive Davis is God.

Hang on a minute, aren't people jumping the gun here. Beyonce commented that she would like Fantasia to be in the film, she didn't exctly say, she wanted her to play the role of Effie. Plus, she's hardly going to say "No. I don't want her anywahere near the film," is she?

That's true but everyone knows by now what role she is going for unless the've been under a rock, it's been printed in many places.
But it wasn't really beyonce, it was the host who asked about Fantasia (which tells you how far her buzz has gone) but I have to admit Beyonce's eyes got big and bright and her smile went from end to end and she looked extremely excited to talk about her. You can't fake that. She could have just said "I hope so" with out the big smile and bright eyes. But I agree, no way would she have said, I hope NOT.
I was just happy she didn't say "fantasia who" when asked! he he
Effie is the only role Fantasia was being seriously considered for. Beyonce is not obligated to say "anthing" about the casting of the film. While I have not seen it, Fantasia's screentest has made the rounds of every studio in Hollywood. I know people who have seen it and say the buzz is the real thing. If Fantasia doesn't get the film of DREAMGIRLS (and I will be shocked if she doesn't) -- she will no doubt get other film work based on the strength of her audition.

it says here that rehearsals started today

It doesn't say that rehearsals start today, it says she's off to Hollywood to "start practicing." Then it talks about the challenges of singing in a different style than she's used to. ('60s and '70s)
My guess is that Beyonce is working with a coach to develop the "voice" for Deena. Working on the songs, etc. My hat is off to her for taking this seriously and putting for the extra effort to create the role.
Here is Beyonce on EXTRA tonight answering a question only about Fantasia. She ...did not willing ...tell that Fantasia had the part...she just was suprised no one told her.
Beyonce' is a perfectionist...she will work hard for this role because this is her dream role...and yes we fans are hoping she is reconginzed by the Acamedy if she...does a stellar job in Dreamgirls in which she will.

Reading is fundamental. I never said anything about Clive saying a word. I said...his "henchmen"...obviously Jamie Foxx is on his label..so if Jamie says anything..it's supposed to work in her favor.
Beyonce was in acting mode when she was asked the question. She wasn't going to tip her hand and say what she really felt.
^^^ of course...that is my point.
Regardless who they cast in the role, does anyone reilize that this has potential to be a hell of a cast recording when release? Anika Noni Rose, the unknown elfie (meaning whoever is cast) beyonce, jamie foxx and eddie murphy i think this will be incredible.
and yes^^^ the soundtrack is going to be crazy GREAT.
I am...really hoping its Whitney Houston or somebody like such that plays Effie.

I know exactly what YOU meant! No need to explain, I knew you were implying that YOU think Clive Davis has the power to make Jamie Foxx and Beyonce say something FOR him, (I guess you think he MADE the extra host mention fantasia in a Beyonce interview showing a picture of her in an evening gown and everything, I mean they weren't talking about Fantasia, they were talking about Beyonce's confirmed part in Dreamgirls, why oh why did Clive Davis make Extra mention Fantasia, right?
That's why I said some people act as if he's God. I simply added the part about Clive Davis not saying anything because it is my right to write whatever I want in my posting. As I said before, if her audition hadn't been great there is nothing that Clive Davis' "heckmen" could say or do as Fantasia's audition would have been history like so many others. If she has the power to have "heckmen" working on her behalf, then that must be one heck of an audition tape. I wanna see it!

I don't like Fantasia (I think she screams her songs) but if she is cast and she does a great job, then more power to her.

I think Effie should be played by a true talented actress however I don't care now if it is Fantasia or not. I ...am more concern about Beyonce' and Eddie Murphy's parts.
Personally I wished Beyonce was Effie but so many people who...tried to take her dream away prevented that...from happening.
But the cool thing about Beyonce is that she is humble and meek which is ...very rare in this industry so she doesn't wish anything but the best for all the cast and even Fantasia.
Beyonce is now in LA practicing and releasing her parts and new role image. She is also...rehearsing the songs. I know our girl is going to do justice ...to Deena. I can't wait!

***But the cool thing about Beyonce is that she is humble and meek***
HA! Yeah, meek like Medusa! Bwahahahahahaha!
And you win the (insert cough here>)Air**** of the year award for your previous offering. And further, there is little doubt that everyone in this room is now dumber for having seen it.
***Personally I wished Beyonce was Effie***
HA! You would wish that...because you have not the clue. You really do not get it, do you B lover? B is the superficial Barbie Doll and that is why she is perfect for the role of Deanna. B is not even Diana Ross, B is Madonna; whose talent is absolutely grounded in provocative marketing and commericialism rather than even the most "humble and meek" of vocal talents. B is not even Broadway, B is straight Madison Avenue! B is Victoria's Secret...
That is the artistic conflict within the script; whether sex appeal & commercialism will trump artistry in the group's core...that is the tension within the Supremes. Who was the authetic vocal talent Florence or Diana? And is the understudy the understudy for a simple reason? less overwhelming vocal talent? But Diana's hidden talent was much more far reaching apparently...because it reached in between B Gordy's sheets! And did Diana not most recently marry a supposed Count? Is she still social climbing? Does she have a private hangar for her private plane? And what a parallel between D and B! Is Jay-Z Beyonce's Gordy? Wow! Tell it all B lover. B must have been really drunk that night! Does B resent the subsequent tumultuous relationship? Was she the innocent flower that was plucked? Or does Jay-Z's power, position, money and "units shipped" juice justify everything about him for B?
My prediction is that B will become the absolute greatest and most authetic Deanna there ever was...even better than the REAL Deanna
Bwahahahahaha!

Awwwww, how cute!
I love Beyonce puckering her lips like that! It makes her look like my blow-up doll. Perhaps that is the effect that B was looking for?
Bwahahahahahaha!
