I am thinking about ability. I think the makers of this movie are thinking about dollars. If beyince is in it then people will flock to see it. She gives it buzz. I know there are women out there thatt can act and sing circles around her. They need to keep looking. and the missy reference is a joke. She does not belong on any screen
Ron, Beyoncé has the ability to carry the role of "Deena Jones" and the girl CAN SING! So HER ability shouldn't even be coming into question. There was never anybody more "right" for this part.

I'm good Marquise. How are u? Thanks for the avatar compliment. I must say I am loving your avatars these days! I do love me some darius! I saw him at audra's concert, stood 2 ft from him and froze. Just stood there staring at him, like an idiot, rather than saying anything. And i love that rendition as well, listen to it whenever i need a darius fix.
Are u going to see Stokes at Feinstein's?

i have been reading up on the show though and i'm sure he's gonna kick major @ss. LOL
as far as darius is concerned he is immensely gifted. i was just visiting his website the other day. he would make a terrfifc CC in the movie!

deena is no problem, but she was on star search marquise.
Ron, you honestly didnt think I wanted to see Beyoncé play "Effie" did you?

I thought that was what this was about. The title says beyonce as effie i think not. I thought we were talking about effie.
I'm glad you brought up that Marquise. I think I'll listen to my cd of the Dreamgirls concert. I think I'm going to see if I can find the album to the show.
Yes, that is the title of the thread, but I'm more for Beyoncé playing "Deena". I totally agree with the person who started this thread that Beyoncé would be miscast as "Effie" in "Dreamgirls". Updated On: 1/28/05 at 12:32 AM
mia i was just listening to some of it this afternoon! LOL

I mean not real pop stars. Like britney. To think that she could have been in Chicago. YIKES! So you are saying that in the line effie says i have the voice i have the talent that her voice is too weak for effie? and Effie has to look bad.
No Ron
In the scene where Curtis announces that Deena will be singing lead in the group (replacing Effie) Effie says: "Deena's beautiful, she's always been beautiful, but I have the voice Curtis, I have the voice...you can't put me in back"

Oh. Who was sheryl lee ralph playing when she did it?
Ms. Ralph was Deena. She could have never played any other part.
All this Beyonce talk makes me nervous - and I really trust that it won't happen (as Effie) - but I will add that stranger things have happened.

So what would qualify a person to play effie?
Whoa...ok...didn't realize that when I posted my message that I was going to be called stupid...or that my knowledge was going to be questioned.I am fully supportive of anyone who has the chops to pull this off doing it. Especially when there are people out there who can bring down the house on stage, in church, or hell...even at the bus stop. My point is before just handing it over to a pop diva, why not look for someone else. Nothing wrong with a little undiscovered talent.
That was merely my 2 cents, and what I was going to do about her playing the role of Effie. Now Deena (thank you for the spell check), I can see her playing, and I think I even said that. But being that I have designed costumes for this show (including regionally) 4 times, and worked on the last touring production with Frenchie Davis as Effie, I think I know a thing or two about the show. While her weight isn't a pre-req (I love Margo's point), there are comments about her weight made throughout the first act, including her own line "This dress does nothing for my body", which doesn't necessarily have to imply to weight, but the way that it has been interpreted since its opening, has been about it.
And just to correct it, in the scene where curtis announces Deena is going to sing lead, before effie gets intothe line about her having the voice, curtis notes that "This is a new act, a new sound, a new look if you wanna make it today, you gotta make it on television" to which Effie replies "So Deena’s gonna sing lead ‘cuz u like the way she looks", which implies that yes, curtis is going for a pop sound, but also an audience friendly look.

Agreed. I like a heavier Effie. Not a pre-req, but I think it makes the show stronger.
