Big Voices

I'm looking for Cast Recordings that are full of BIG voices... ie Dreamgirls... stuff like that... over the top vocals... This doesn't exclude stuff like Piazza... I just love girls with HUGE voices... I already have things like Hair, the benefit recording, but I would love to have more...

Also, did they record the Funny Girl benefit?

re: Big Voices

Check out anything Ethel Merman or Patti LuPone have been in. No recording of the FUNNY GIRL concert has been commercially made.

re: Big Voices

Lippa's "The Wild Party" has quite a bit of female belting (Idina, Julia Murney) Check it out - if you don't already have it.

Once On This Island - the song "Mama Will Provide"

In Trousers - Mary Testa's songs

re: Big Voices

SFANW has a lot of that. And Patti LuPone in Evita.

Aida
A little swash, a bit of buckle - you'll love it more than bread.

re: Big Voices

Patti LuPone in Evita is AMAZING if you won't big high belty stuff...puts them all to shame :)

Little Shop of Horrors Off-Broadway with Ellen Greene...she's unreal.

Children Of Eden

Most Liza stuff

Its not over the top of vocals or all that belty, but Marla Schaffel is amazing in Jane Eyre

Jekyl and Hyde (not a favorite...but lots of belting)

Les Miz

Once On This Island

Rent, Tommy, and We Will Rock You all have some great big voices too if you like "rock operas"

re: Big Voices

Don't be ashamed for posting wicked, that has a lot of good belting in it...I was going to post that too...

re: Big Voices

Don't be ashamed apdarcey! I totally agree with you! But for other albums, here's my list:

Les Miz
Chicago
Hairspray
Rent (without a doubt)

And I totally agree with the Wild Party. We're doing songs from it for our show this summer, and it's amazing. Raise the Roof is offically my new favorite song, I can't stop belting it!

re: Big Voices

Brooklyn has horrible music and horrible lyrics, but some of the vocals are actually quite nice.

re: Big Voices

I was also going to say bklyn but I figured I would get eaten alive if I even mentioned it. Wonderful cast, wonderful singing...though I think that it is much better live. Since I am anticipating a bunch of people reading this and saying that bklyn is just full of "screeching", let me just say that there are a couple parts on the cast recording that could lead one to believe that there's screeching, but this is definitely not the case if you see it live. I guess this wouldn't really help much since you obviously cannot experience it live anymore, unless you were to see the tour.

re: Big Voices

Yeah Brooklyn has some great voices in it and some big vocal bits, but honestly, as far as the lyrics, storyline and score goes its not really worth the money. But that's just me, you may very well like it. And yeah, I'd have posted Wicked too. There's so much belting on that cast recording. Also agree with The Wild Party and Aida, some really great vocal talents there. And I don't know, maybe I'm alone on this one, but maybe Hunter Foster in Urinetown?

re: Big Voices

Ok, if you decide not to buy the bklyn cast recording I would say that you should at least listen to the songs "Once upon a time" and "Streetsinger".

re: Big Voices

Yeah maybe go to Amazon and listen to the samples. I know people who really loved the CR and if you're an Eden fan, she really impresses on the recording but It'd probably be a good idea to test it out first to see what you think. I bought it when I saw it at Borders without listening to samples first because I am a fan of Eden's and while I was impressed by her and some of the other cast members, I was deeply unmoved by the lyrics and whatnot. In the end I thought it was probably a bit of a waste of my money so just putting it out there, so you don't waste 20 bucks too in the case that you don't like it that much.

re: Big Voices

I think Brooklyn was amazing, and the music is the best part...so for the people who like the music but not the show...20.00 is cheaper then a ticket. (I know its closed but hey tour)

Yes, and Eden Espinosa is definitely a good example of a belter...I'm always amazed when I listen to her sing.

Sorry to burst someones bubble but Ellen Green's voice is not that big. I saw her in 3 Penny Opera and her mike went out and all you could do is see her mouth move.

Ahhhh!!! Sacrilege darling! Ellen Greene is phenomenal! Another big voice is Laurie Beechman. No one can sing The Narrator like her!
