The actor Billy Crudup, whose last major New York performance won him a Tony Award, for Tom Stoppards The Coast of Utopia during the 2006-07 season, will star in the world premiere production of Adam Rapps play The Metal Children at the Vineyard Theater in May.
The play, to be directed by Mr. Rapp for the Off Broadway theater, is about a New York writer who travels to a small American town to defend one of his young adult novels that has been banned by the school board, a confrontation that turns into a heated debate about religious beliefs and censorship.
Mr. Crudup won the Tony for best featured actor in a play in 2007 for his performance as the literary critic Vissarion Belinsky in parts one and two of The Coast of Utopia. He had been nominated twice before for best actor in a play, for The Pillowman in 2005 and the revival of The Elephant Man in 2002.
He made his professional stage debut at the Vineyard in 1994 in Chiori Miyagawas play American Dreaming, and a few months later came to wider attention in the role of the tutor Septimus Hodge in Mr. Stoppards play Arcadia.

Posted: 3/2/10 at 6:20pmhaha- this man does seem to have a preference to play writers... "Pillowman," "Coast of Utopia," "Trust the Man," "Big Fish..." The impressive thing about it though is that all of them are so incredibly different. I've never seen Crudup give a less than fantastic performance, so I'll gladly see him in this!
