At some point, I would like to direct a small-scale version of The Lieutenant of Inishmore by Martin McDonagh. The space available is rather small, and there is literally no budget, so I would be paying for most of it out of pocket. As you know, the show has a bit of gore in it. Could anyone recommend any cheap and reliable good fake blood recipes, and how to do some cheap but effective effects? I'd like to have blood spatters and all that, I would just like some opinions as to how to go about it. I have a vague idea that applies tubes and all that, but I was wondering if anyone had any cheap efficient ways.

I was the stage manager for Macbeth in college and we mixed red food coloring with liquid detergent. We then filled condoms with the fake blood. It was good for fights, because you could rip the condoms apart while facing upstage and blood would splatter all over the place....

In case you need it to be edible:

Karo syrup mixed with Black Cherry Kool-Aid powder. It even creates realistic-looking clots.

It's tasty, but its stains very badly.
