Slum dweller makes it big in Bollywood. Forgets his roots, has lots of doubt and gets the girl. Basically, an Indian male version of Jennifer Lopez.

****Spoilers****

Young man (Akaash) living with large, extended family (which inexplicably includes a significant number of men-turned-women...perhaps such surgery is covered by major medical in India???) in a Bombay slum, decides to be a music video idol and without much difficulty realizes his dream. Embarassed by his roots, he turns his back on those who love him. He meets a girl who shows him the error of his ways, and comes back to the fold by the end of the show, but of course not before someone near and dear is murdered.

Is that what it's about? I just listen to the CD thinking it's about Bolla, Bollywood. Bolla, Bollywood. Bolla, Bolla, Bolla, Bolla, Bollywood. Bolla, Bollywood....hehe. Ah, I love it, though....

Do you dance around your apartment to it?

I got the sample CD, listened to it once and then threw it in the garbage.

I heard one song from it, threw myself in the garbage, and died. Am I the only one aside from Dollypop who doesn't like it?

It's really tough to describe. I wanted so much to hate this show. I bought the DC KNOWING I was going to hate it. You have to hear all the songs, you can't judge it by one song. I knew that it wasn't going to be the kind of music that I am accustomed to listening to. But, once I hit play it was like a disco club in my bedroom! You really have to get into it, feel the music, touch the beat and try and dance to it. If you can do that, you'll find yourself able to enjoy it in the theatre. The music is just fun to listen to. Don't tell me you've never heard the music from The Lion King. It's very similar to the African rhythms in The Lion King only different. It's just addictive. I can't describe it. I'm the LAST person in the would who should like this show but for some reason, I just do. It works for me. Please give it a second chance. Try to feel the beat. Try to dance to it. You might find yourself surprised. Updated On: 4/6/04 at 08:16 PM

I agree with you Dollypop, The music to me was not worth keeping. The show is already closing on the west end. It's another Whistel Down The Wind.

Actually the show is closing in the West End only to apply the Broadway revisions. Just as Sunset did in '94. Whistle Down the Wind never made it to Broadway so I don't get the connection. And yes! Listen to the CD nekkid!!! Some of the songs are very passionate. You might want to make love with someone, with this soundtrack playing in the background....! (what you do on your own time is your business....)

The audience I saw it with seemed to have 'hated it' or 'loved it' reactions. One person gave it a standing ovation. The family behind me loved it. The woman next to me who complained that the seats were too small (apparently she hasn't been to the Schubert theatre) didn't like the music and was upset that the stars of the show didn't have more Broadway leading role experience. Spare me. She's seen everything that ALW is attached to... Her husband was "mesmerized" and liked the male lead despite his wife’s aversion to him.

During the intermission one woman in a black pants-suit compared the dancing in the show to the YMCA moves and did a rendition herself.

As much as the critic in me wanted to hate the show, I liked it. It made me happy. My friend thought it was the worst show he’s ever seen on Broadway, and I think he’s seen all of the musicals within the last 8 years.

I like the sampler, and it sounds like a "happy" musical. I'm looking forward to seeing it next month.
