Well, I'm guessing it's because the way he was depicted in the musical made him look extremely evil. He was the one who kept pushing for speed, he was the one who took a child's place in the lifeboat to save himself...yep, that's enough to rile up the audience.
At the revival of Peter Pan, Captain Hook's first entrance is usually booed.

I agree with Thou Shall Not. When I went, the audience did not boo, but they might as well have. I dont know, maybe before the show the entire audience collectively decided to golf clap for the rest of the evening. Also, after the seductive bad dance, I could not help but think of the opening scene in Death Becomes Her where people were obnoxiously leaving.

We're talking about booing as in this show blows, not booing the bad guy, right?
Am I the only one who saw CARRIE the musical????
The audience booed the night I was there. The person I was with said, "Oh, that's not nice..." because even though the boos were for the material, they ended up being launched at the teenager playing Carrie.
But then, on our way out, my companion glanced at the sign of ticket prices (we had gotten comps). I don't remember the exact amount, but that's around when orchestra tickets had gone up to about $75. She said: "$75? For that? I would boo!"

I saw the first Broadway preview. No boos. A little derisive laughted when Betty Buckley had to sing "Don't cry baby..." to Carrie immediately after stabbing her. The teenager who played Carrie is, I believe, still a lead in Chicago in London. Linzi Hately. I got her autograph.

No, it was definitely booing at the CARRIE performance I went to, during curtain calls.
Saw " We Interrupt This Program" & it was a dog. Another show that should have been booed is one called "Don't Play Us Cheap"me ) that centered around 2 cockroaches at a party. My word was that hysterically bad. Just the concept alone is a hoot.
Re boo-ing at Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. This is a tradition at English pantomime. Booing the bad guys when they are on stage as a way to tell the heroes of the show that they are about.
well i remember those wonderful OBC linequeen of RENT booing sherie rene scott on one of her first days as Maureen...after Idina left, instead of "MOOING" with her, they BOOed with her...
Booing at Sherie Rene Scott is like spitting on the Pope! Waitaminute... that's not such a bad idea...
