Quibbler - is that a plea for an Into The Woods tape disguised as an opinion on bootlegging?
I'm not sure...might have to do with images, sets, costumes, all of which are not issues with recordings.
Type_A_Tiff, haha. No, I was just saying how, since the show has closed, why not make it available for home viewing?

Some people have no way to get to broadway. Those people are deprived and are stuck with poorly recorded, difficult-to-find, tapes. Yeah, a boot is cheaper than the hundered-dollar ticket, but there's nothing like BEING THERE while the show is performed. Boots are like a poor photocopy of the show, but they're all some of us will ever get. They really are no substitute for the actual thing. I would rather shell out a hundered dollars for a live performance than twenty for a boot any day of the week, but not everyone has the luxrey of choice. Is it wrong? Yeah. But it's not like the shows are losing money from the folks who can't see them anyway. Often times, there're profiting because someone may see a boot and then go buy the OBCR. And what about closed shows? They're lost forever except for a few bootlegs.

Well, just to bump this back up and give all those on their soapboxes something to think about for "your protection and the protection of this board"
How many of you are using COPYRIGHTED, ILLEGAL, photos as your icon, of your fav Bwy show or star or publication, that you downloaded for the web, saved to your computer, and then used it as your own??? Hmmm???
Come on people. Don't preach and point with one hand while your holding stolen things in your other one.
I believe Ms. Loy doesn't care anymore.
Actually, I don't believe she'd EVER care. She was above all that.
EDIT: Just in case she did mind, I now have Nick Jr., otherwise known as Asta, as my icon. Asta is thrilled to have his pic up here!

I, for one, usually stray away from heavily copyrighted photos.
And please, how does a picture compare to an entire script or video? I don't think that bootlegs are the worst thing to ever happen, but I don't think that people should be publicly asking for them on this board- AND I think that there are a big difference between photos and scripts/videos.

You're right LadyG.
I've forgotten that there is a "big difference" between stealing a little and stealing a lot.
I'll try to keep that in mind.....

I KNEW that you were going to say that. Thanks for the sarcasm, by the way.
But let's say that one uses a copyrighted picture as their icon. Will that shut down a site? I hope not. Maybe the person with the icon will be asked to take it down. But asking for bootlegs on a message board? What do you think has more of a chance of getting the board shut down? Realistically.
>> I don't know what happens to the tapes.
these tapes are called "B-Rolls" and put on dvd and given to the press for the critics awards, drama desk awards, and to the other voters in the event the show is tony nominated. it's part of the press packet, and is not offically released to the public. i have one from taboo (LEGAL!) that was given for the drama desks voters. so, if ya join the press, you can get ahold on one.
in relation to the topic of bootlegs being illegal- not every that is illegal is inherently wrong. remember when drinking was against the law? sodomy? pot? oh wait... nix the last one. anyway, i'm supporting matt_g here on his points.

but...film/tv stars have bad moments on film that follow them around forever. i.e. poor acting skills early in their career or just bad choices in material. Isn't that sorta the same as by chance having an "off night" in the theatre when you were being filmed. it's bound to happen to every performer at least once in their career.
I'm not going to be like certain other people here and say one opinion is completely wrong, but I will say that the performers on stage today know that on any given night their performance will be recorded either on audio or video. It's just a fact. They might not like it, but it is going to happen.

Perhaps we can make this one of those Notices that permanently remains at the top of the board.

I have a question. I know bootlegs are illegal, so I am not inquiring about that. But when Wicked is over, will they release something on DVD with the original cast? I really want to see it.
Do they do that with Broadway Shows?
Thank you
No they do not do that for all Broadway shows, and I have a doubt that they will not do it for Wicked (the OBC is gone, and I don't know if they taped it).
"Do they do that with Broadway Shows?"
Not on a routine basis.

Rathnait62 is right. I think it does have to do with those things along with the fact that most Broadway shows go on forever by way of Regional,Community, & school theatres as well as tours. Unlike movies, which once made, that's it unless someone decides to do a remake. But, that usually doesn't happen until years down the road. I think the directors and choreographers would like to keep their work from being copied over and over again by every other production. I know many things are passed on from production to production just by virtue of being seen by individuals that remember how certain things were done, but I guess not having it on tape eliminates complete plagerism. Even still, I would like to have as many shows as possible preserved on tape and available to the general public.
edited because i didn't spell Rathnait62 right.
Oops! edited again because I still mispelled it.

"I think the directors and choreographers would like to keep their work from being copied over and over again by every other production"
But if you go by that logic, than these directors, actors and chorographers work will all fade once the people who saw them are gone. Than what's left? Just a bunch of people who wish they could have seen them. Than what was the point?

Agreed! But I do think I have heard somewhere before that is why Equity prohibits taping. It has something to do with protecting the director and choreographers work. I think we all know of and/or have seen productions that use at least some of what was used in another show, so some things are going to be copied whether they like it or not. I for one think this union rule needs to be changed.
Not meaning to bump this thread, but Matt_G, milk nearly came out of my nose when I read your signature quote.
Also, does anyone know how to actually get access to the Lincoln Centre Library archive collection? I know you need to be researching the show/part, etc., but what do you need to bring to prove it? (Equity card, drama course grades transcript, etc.)
I believe you just need to say you are working on a show.
And I love that quote. It's from BRING IT ON. =)
