Boston Globe Tony article/predictions...

Ed Siegel, who seems to be the main theatre critic for the Boston Globe wrote an article in today's Sunday edition profiling 'Piazza,' 'Bee,' 'Spamalot,' and 'DRS.' I'll include some snippets, but you should follow the link and read the whole article.

"If life were fair or the Tonys were smart, next Sunday's awards would probably be split among the four. We all know that isn't the way of the world, but just for the sake of argument, here's the way it should go. 'Spamalot" would win best musical, 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" best score, 'The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" best book, and 'The Light in the Piazza" best set design and actress."

"'Spelling Bee" has been cast as this year's 'Avenue Q," the low-budget puppet show that upset 'Wicked" to win the best musical award last year. 'Spamalot," meanwhile," has inherited the 'Wicked" position as the megasized favorite.

There's a difference, though. While 'Wicked" is pumped-up piffle, 'Spamalot" maintains a high degree of the artful zaniness of the movie it's based on, 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail."

'Spamalot," in fact, has much of the same charm as 'Spelling Bee." True, some of the merriment is borrowed from Python, but a lot of it -- the song about lacking Jews in the cast, for example -- is new and thigh-slappingly funny. This is the show that leaves you reveling in the buoyancy that seems to be the province of great musicals.

So let's hope that there won't be any dirty rotten surprises or any artificial light in the piazzas this year. We won't be sorry to see any of the 'Spelling Bee" contestants win. But the best musical this season is 'Spamalot."
