This looks to be the off-broadway event of the season. DYING to see it!

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

Drag Out: Vineyard Extends Wig Out! Run Off-Broadway

Off-Broadway's Vineyard Theatre has announced an extension of its production of Tarell Alvin McCraney's Wig Out! through Nov. 2.

Tina Landau directs the work featuring "Dexter" star Erik King and drag persona Daniel T. Booth (a.k.a. Sweetie)

Previews began Sept. 11, and the show officially opened Sept. 30 at the downtown venue. Performances were originally scheduled to play through Oct. 19, but the troupe has added two weeks of performances "due to strong ticket sales and on the strength of reviews," according to an announcement.

Wig Out! is "a fierce and intoxicating new play which tells of two competing drag houses, and the loves, loyalties, and dreams within each that draw their members together and apart," according to Vineyard.

Rebecca Naomi Jones (Passing Strange) is also featured in the cast with Joshua Cruz, Glenn Davis, Sean Patrick Doyle, McKenzie Frye, Nathan Lee Graham, Angela Grovey, Andre Holland and Clifton Oliver.

The design team features James Schuette (scenic), Toni-Leslie James (costumes), Peter Kaczorowski (lighting), Robert Kaplowitz (sound) and Wendy Parson (hair, wig and make-up).

The Vineyard has undergone some modified seating: The stage is transformed to create the world of the show, including "a runway that stretches into the audience and onstage seating."

McCraney earned the inaugural Paula Vogel Playwriting Award in 2007 from The Vineyard Theatre. His The Brothers Size was previously seen at The Public Theater and his In The Red and Brown Water (also directed by Landau) played Atlanta's Alliance Theatre. Vineyard developed Wig Out! as part of its Lab Series.

Tickets to Wig Out! at the Vineyard Theatre, 108 East 15th Street, are available by calling (212) 353-0303 or by visiting vineyardtheatre.org.

I saw Wig Out two weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's very much like Paris Is Burning, but really shows all that goes on inside a "house" when preparing for an event.

We sat at the end of the runway, which was great.

I saw it on Sunday and loved it. Even Tina Landau's direction, whose direction is not my usual cup of tea, was very good. The entire cast was amazing.

"It does what a musical is supposed to do; it takes you to another world. And it gives you a little tune to carry in your head. Something to take you away from the dreary horrors of the real world. A little something for when you're feeling blue. You know?"
