Yes, Sondheim's music was stunning and impactful, but Jonathan Tunick is the other half of the collaboration, making SS's music so memorable.

Paul Gemignani too.
Which leads me to ask. Somewhere I read recently that Gemignani pushed hard to have Michael Starobin as the orchestrator for SUNDAY IN THE PARK because previously he began having difficulty working with Tunick. Has anyone else read anything about that or am I misinterpreting something?

If I recall correctly, in Lapine's book Putting It Together, Starobin was warned by Tunick to watch out for Gemignani. I think he said he was "political". Sorry, I would look it up in the book but I actually listened to it on Audible so its difficult to find the exact passage.

And by the way, I'm all for showing love for Jonathan Tunick - or any of Sondheim's collaborators for that matter - but I was worried this meant he had died!

The nice thing about Sondheim is that he was always crediting his collaborators and correcting them when people would give him credit for things that he didn’t feel he should take credit for. It’s a bit of a contrast to Andrew Lloyd Webber who seems to slap his name above the title of everything despite not directing or writing actual words for his shows.
On the case of orchestrations I actually think I recall he would thank them in every Tony speech for Best Score win too.
Give me claws and a hunch, just away from this bunch.
