The two open tonight in Fiddler on the Roof. They both are perfect in the roles!

Harvey and Andrea are fantastic. I am jealous i was not invited.

I love Harvey. The most talented man on Broadway today.

I'm not sure I understand this. Is it typical for a new cast's first performances to be considered previews? I've heard of this being done a couple of times before, but what exactly determines whether their first performance is "official" or not?

And best wishes to both!

"Tonight's the official opening.

Let us know how it goes. Have a nice time!

Emcee, tonight is probably just an official opening night...after-party...press...etc.

Emcee, it happens when the producers want the show to be re-reviewed with the new cast member(s).

Generally. And in this case, the smartest move they could make.

yeah they did it to try and recover from a flopping revival in a huge expensive theatre...

sorry, are we talking about the same show?

I watched Fiddler Jan.8. Andrea is great! but Harvey, well, I should say he did add some funny points in the role but a Big Success? Give me a break. He cannot hit the notes. Period. The song is not in his range. It makes me feel pain to hear his " rich man".

I don't understand why people are so critisized to Molina yet so tolerant to Harvey. I don't say Molina's Tevye is as great as Topol, but he can hit the notes.

I saw the show with molina and loved it. It definitely was not the best production ever but very very enjoyable.

Yet, the current production is a fincial flop which is why the brought in Harvey and Andrea to try and recoup their investment.

Well, it is a business. I am sure that is not the ONLY reason why they brought these two into the roles.

Sanda,
Molina is a stronger singer but Harvey is so passionate.
In my opinion, the PASSION Harvey shows as Tevye makes up for his singing.
The man is a very solid actor. I was very impressed with his Tevye. His Edna on the other hand was the greatest role in the world.
LOVE HARVEY.

sorry, I just feel it is so unfair to talk about two actors in this special same role with such a big different attitude.

I don't think Harvey's passion is that great, I think it is a little overacting. And it is so apparent that he cannot sing the song as it should be. That is a big problem.

I know Harvey's a great and talented actor, but Tevye doesn't fit him. Molina is much better

Sanda,
You have to take into account that you obviously saw the show early in its previews. As did I. I thought Harvey was fantastic. I can only compare it to when Tyne Daly did Gypsy. The singing wasn't great but it did not matter. We were let into the heart and soul of the character. I expect Harveys reviews to be nothing but raves.

Iris,

but based on your post, Havey's voice did not improve much. I don't know. Am I too picky? I just feel in Fiddler, if Tevye cannot deliver the beautiful songs like "If I were a richman", "To life"and "Sabeth Prayer", it will totally destroy the beauty of the show. Havey's voice sounds so out of right point when he sang with the chorus. That is really painful.

Sanda,
Maybe he was just really off when you saw it and was having a bad night. Honestly; I had no problems with his voice. It just was not a issue for me. I got involved in the story and totally bought him as Tevye. But anyay; in keeping in line with this threads intention; I wish both Harvey and Andrea a fabulous "official" opening night. BREAK A LEG!

Harvey sounded great last night on The Late Show. He just sung a little bit a capella.

I don't understand why people are so critisized to Molina yet so tolerant to Harvey. I don't say Molina's Tevye is as great as Topol, but he can hit the notes.

I think some people care that every note is perfect, that the voice is as good as it can be. Other people care that the actor can deliver the song with all the necessary emotion, that he can act the part. That's why some actors who have gorgeous voices don't seem to be all that famous, while some actors who don't have the voice can still have a great career in musical theater. (And why some studio recordings of musicals with opera singers aren't that successful.)

If you prefer one, you may not be able to appreciate the other. And if you didn't like Harvey in an earlier show, there's a good chance you won't change your mind. (Though it is possible he was having an off night.) I haven't seen Fiddler yet, but I do plan to go. And I suspect that, given my general tastes/reactions, I shall mostly likely appreciate his performance.
