re: 'Brief Encounter' To Close Before Major 2009 Tour

Its basically a ticket agent nowadays.
I didn't know you had seen it so at least you have! Sadly I cant make it again before it goes. I hope to see it on tour to see how it works in different venues and also don't forget they are aiming to bring it back in a years time.
Its back to movies for now at the Cinema Haymarket but they still have the theatre license from Westminister and talks are well advanced for Kneehigh/ RSC to bring in their other show, 'Don John', into the venue next April.

I just saw this show last night. AMAZING... I LOVED it.

I was raving about it all night. I wanted to go back, but they're completely sold out until the 16th.

I hope it transfers to Broadway.

Such a disappointment that they didn't pursue the playing in old cinema route.
It will still look fab in all the old theatres its playing so far.

re: 'Brief Encounter' To Close Before Major 2009 Tour

Went to see the first performance tonight at the Royal Theatre, Northampton and was very impressed. The show was just as good as when I saw it in London, back in September, with very little alterations to the staging. The Royal itself is a lovely theatre and a great place to kick off what I'm sure will be a successful tour. The cast were superb and seemed as though they'd been performing the show to audiences for weeks. It was very strong all round re: 'Brief Encounter' To Close Before Major 2009 Tour
One little disappointment was the lack of advertisements that were seen during the interval,in the London production...other than that, no complaints! re: 'Brief Encounter' To Close Before Major 2009 Tour

I have a quick question. Is Kneehigh theater planning a tour of Breif Encounter here in the states. I noticed that its playing in the fall in San Fran and also playing In Minneapolis in Feb. I hope they bring over the actors with them if this is the case. I did see that the director is also directing the US productions. If anyone has any info on this could you please pass it along. I really want to see this play.

I read the header of this thread and panicked!!!....for a moment I thought it meant it was not touring, before I realised it was the old thread before it closed in London..we're seeing it in Cambridge next week.
The Royal in Northampton is absolutely beautiful...and I love the huge foyers between it and the Dearngate..as impressive (without the river) as the National. I saw a great Follies there when it re opened.

The Royal and Derngate are one of the few reasons I actually enjoy living in Northampton! They did a great job of helping to kick off the Brief Encounter tour and have an intruiging sounding Alan Ayckbourn season coming up in a few months time, in which the man himself will be involved.
And nice to hear about Follies! I was lucky enough to be a part of this production (albeit a small part!)

Just got back from this at The Lowry. IMO It's almost as good as it was in London, Some songs have been replaced, there's a new scene or two, slightly different direction at times, and some of the music is now recorded. The accents are TERRIBLY stiff in act one, but it still as amazingly brilliant. My only real gripe would be it's no longer as cosy in the huge BLUE Lyric theatre. Go and see it on tour, you won't regret it!

re: 'Brief Encounter' To Close Before Major 2009 Tour

I caught this in Bradford at the weekend and (as posted above many months ago) I took my aunties to see it as a special birthday treat. And it certainly was - I came to it having only seen snatches of the film and it was superb, and the old dears loved it too.

The band playing and singing songs in and amongst the audience prior to the start created an intimate feel, which the show needed in the large Bradford Alhambra and didn't lose throughout the evening. The willingness to go off at a tangent for the sake of a bit of fun or nostalgia gave the piece its own character and drew an affectionate response from the audience, whilst the interaction between live performance and film was novel. And although the whole cast were very versatile, the stand out performance for me was from Joseph Alessi (as the stationmaster) who is such a great character actor and entertainer - he seems to be able to turn his hand to anything and carry it off with panache. I remembered I'd seen him in Privates on Parade last year at the WYP where he was also superb.

I was told the word of mouth (at the hairdressers and in the Co-op) had been excellent but on Saturday night the theatre was, at the most, 2/3rds full which seemed a shame but it didn't seem to disappoint the cast. I only hope they'd got some extra bookings during the week.
