I was in the show in high school [I was Mr. MacLaren] The only book issues were that the supporting characters like Jeff, Meg Brockey, Mr. MacLaren and in some aspects Jean Maclaren/Bonnie Jean don't have very much to do. But other than that, the music is glorious and beautiful.
"Anybody that goes to the theater, I think we’re all misfits, so we ended up on stage or in the audience.” --- Patti LuPone.
I think it was rumored that Clarke Thorell and Christian Borle were workshopping the male roles in a Rob Ashford production.
My wish list:
Tommy- Jason Danieley or Aaron Lazar Charlie- Euan Morton Fiona- Laura Benanti or Sarah Uriate Berry Meg- Emily Skinner (maybe Celia Keenan-Bolger if they wanted to go younger)
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
I think the urge to revise the book comes from the time travel elements in the show- I was involved with a production in the early '80's where they shifted the time frame up to make it contemprorary, rather than the "50's". It was OK but not necessary. I think it works either way.
I think the book changes will work for it as opposed to against it. It's not like when Hwang redid the book for Flower Drum Song and changed everything around and made it lame and not work.

Reviews and the like
The big problem is, they portray Meg as being a slut (she came from a slutty family, she was flower girl at her mother's wedding) and let's face it, that's pretty dated. Nobody cares about that (oh, yeah, except them darn Republicans) anymore, so that would have to be adjusted.
