Bring Back Birdie

Now Before you jump on me for sugesting a Bye Bye Birdie Revivial. Let me say right now, I am not at all. Im asking If anyone knows anything About the mid 80's flop "Bring Back Birdie that was the sequal to bye bye birdie. Right Now Im playing Albert in my HS production and I was reading the liner notes of the soundtrack of "Bye Bye.." which mentioned with like 3 sentences of explanation this BBB sequal. Just to satisfy my own curiosity, whats the plot, which cherectors are back, hows the music. If anywone saw it and can somehow manage to give me some details I would really like to know

It was so dreadful I forgot it immediately after I left the theater. You have to work HARD to make a show that bad!

Any show that features a musical number sung while sitting on the toilet and using rhythm "flush" is best forgotten ASAP.

Hmm, I always liked Bye Bye Birdie - I never heard of Bring Back Birdie though!

re: Bring Back Birdie

To be fair, Mr. T, that WAS supposed to be a punk rock moment. A 1980 Broadway version of punk rock, but still.

I don't know about the revival but in my middle school version I played Mrs. MacAfee. It's such a fun show, Bye Bye Birdie. I mean it's old fashion but fun. Have fun playing Albert!

re: Bring Back Birdie

Here's a snipet from the liner notes of Bring Back Birdie (yes, I have the recording, I am THAT much of a show queen):

"It seems that Bridie disappeared eighteen years ago, and Albert has been offered twenty thousand dollars if he can track down his former client and get him to perform on a TV Grammy Award special along with other giant recording stars of yesterday. Albert has accepted the chanllenge, eager to return to the music business, and Rose is unhappy about it."
"Do you know ChrisLovesShows?" "Yes. Why, yes he does!"

yes you are a show queen lol. and thats awesome. but seriously what would compel them to write that? I almost want to see this. but come now only 20K? birdie was worth 50K in the fifties. interesting/ and yes I have been spending way to much time learning lines

re: Bring Back Birdie

BRING BACK BIRDIE. Well, I saw it. Chris gives you the basic premise. Instead of Ed Sullivan it was the Grammy Awards. Instead of telephones it was television sets.

Not a happy experience.

Poor Donald O'Connor. Poor Chita Riviera. Poor audience.

31 Previews and 4 performances.
Opened 3/5/1981, at the Martin Beck.

Four days after SOPHISTICATED LADIES, and about 24 days before WOMAN OF THE YEAR.

Yes, it's a disaster, but not without some charms. The number that Mr. Tuttle refers to, "We Are Filth," was dropped after the first preview.

Still, I think "You Can Never Go Back," is pretty fun, and Rivera does work wonders with "I Like What I Do," (which featured strategic product placement that household product manufacturers would now kill for) and "Well, I'm Not!" "20 Happy Years" is also a nice opening number.

Have fun, I loved playing Albert when I did this show. Heard of "Bring Back Birdie," but never looked into it...from what I've read, why bother? re: Bring Back Birdie

Im playing Randolph in my production of Tripple B right now which is so fun. I love my part but i don't really like the show. I was never a fan. I can't imagine having a sequal. It doesn't really end on a note that there could be a sequal...

re: Bring Back Birdie

What is it with Strouse and making flop sequels? Has a sequel to a Broadway musical EVER been successful? Has any other composer ever even tried? The only one I can think of is "Let 'em eat Cake"
#21

re: Bring Back Birdie

I had a lot of fun at Bring Back Birdie, despite its obvious flaws. Just like Let 'Em Eat Cake, it was a sequel to a light, fun show that turned the material into harsh, dark satire. Birdie gets signed to make an appearance on the Grammys, but when he tries getting back into performance shape by playing a club gig he gets booed off the stage. Everyone thinks he's washed up and he's embarrassed to appear on TV. In order to get out of his contract they pretend that he's dead. But once he's "dead" the whole country deems him a lost genius and he becomes more popular than ever.
