Oh Boy! My evening at "Bring Back Birdie" was very painful.
It was a field trip with my fellow classmates. We were brought all the way from Warterford, Connecticut just to see this production. So, we travelled by bus into Manhattan, which took hours, because two of our teachers were involved with this production. One was the lighting designer and the other was the costume designer.
We sat in the theatre with high expectations as our Set Design teacher who had worked on Broadway since 1956 having designed the set for the original production of "Long Day's Journey Into Night" and many other great shows and our Costume design teacher who had designed costumes (and some sets) going back to 1960.
And then there was the cast featuring Donald O'Connor, Chita Rivera and Maurice Hines.
I just remember us sitting there with our jaws dropping as we watched this train wreck take place. I specifically remember the use of the TV screens used to create a lot of the set and then when it was done, the backstage tour of the Martin Beck Theatre, which was the most interesting part of the evening.
Needless to say, it was LONG drive back to Connecticut that night.

To find out more about it pick up "not Since Carrie" it chronicles some of the show's funnier moments that weren't supposed to be funny. Great read.

Hmmm, I love provoking 
Anyhow, I love the CD, after all it is Charles Strouse score, you can't go wrong with him. Sure, the punk rock songs are silly, but every single song is damn melodic. So I don't think I would have liked to watch the show, I like the recording nonetheless.

I just got this recording on Amazon after reading about it in this message board. I have only heard it once so far, but it is pretty awful. The lyrics...dear g-d! Chita has a couple of good songs, but it was probably horrible to witness live. It's too bad I was born a year after this show came to broadway. I would have loved to see it. It's also a shame that "Filth" wasn't recorded. Dropped after the first preview????? How bad could this song have been? It is so fun to analyze flops! PM me if you saw the show and want to dicsuss it!

the best song in the show is A Man Worth Fightin' For. Granted, it sounds like it is totally out of place, but Chita Rivera makes it extremely enjoyable!

I completely sympathize with "Middle Age Blues" . I understand Donald O Connor did not want to sing a specific song . Wonder if it was this one ?

Yes, during my research, I found out that he hated Middle Age Blues. It is such a cute song though. "woke up in the morning and the wrong parts were stiff" Hilarious!

I can understand having difficulty singing about what you had previously or were than experiencing. I still like the song & I liked a lot of the score. The storyline sounds good so what happened. With a serviceable score, good story & top notch cast where did it go wrong ?

"Filth" is where it went wrong. Also, the book is just horrible. Can' you tell from listening to it?
