Broadway Attire Advice

I have not been to a Broadway show in 7 years and am going to NYC to see 2 musicals this weekend. Are people still dressing up for the shows? I don't want to show up in a dress and my boyfriend in a suit if it's more casual on Broadway now. Any advice?

depends when you go.... night shows (esp. on Saturday's) you'll see girls in dresses and stuff... and most of them look out of place. Matinees are very casual... jeans. I would suggest casual... not jeans for a night show though

The last two times I went - Wicked and Bklyn - people were dressed both casual AND dressy. There were people with nice suits and dresses and people with jeans and sneakers. So...I'd guess it would be - dress however you feel most comfortable!

Thanks! We're seeing Brooklyn on Friday and Rent on Saturday. looks like times have changed since 7 years ago when it seems like everyone dressed up.

you could definitely still go with the dressy attire, but it's not expected and won't be the status quo. you'll see people at broadway shows in any thing from shorts and a t-shirt to full-on tuxes and evening gowns. it also depends on what show it is and whether it's a matinee. I'll usually put on something decent, but I save the suit for opera.

i would save your best outfit for Brooklyn, cause it's still in previews and a big deal right now --i'm seeing it on Sat : )
For Rent... i have no idea... dress really comfortably cause you're gonna have to sit through like 2 hours of Drew Lachey...

Is Drew Lachey terrible in Rent? That would be a bummer since the tickets were not cheap.

You can wear whatever you want. If you don't want to get dressed up to sit in a seat for 2 1/2 hours, than don't. I'll tell you flat out that when I go to shows, I most of the time will do standing room and there's no way in hell I'm gettin' all gussied up to stand in the back of a theatre.

Yes, we saw Broolyn in Denver(we live here) 2 times and the second time all we could get was standing room tickets. We were going to try this in NYC but since we only have 3 days there didn't want to risk not getting tickets.

I do love Rent and have seen it several times in different cities, just never on Broadway. I really am looking forward to it, even if there's one bad seed. Yes, I want to know the truth.

haha.. the truth is that i haven't heard one good thing about his performance. I personally never saw him in it, but i did see him on Broadway on Broadway and it was the worse few minutes of my life. However.. i heard the rest of the cast is still awesome and the show is too good to be ruined by one character...

Thanks for the info.. I'm sure it will still be amazing. Hopefully Brooklyn is amazing as well. We loved it so much in Denver that we're traveling to NYC primarily to see it. Hopefully they didn't change it too much from the pre-Broadway run here in Denver. The songs sound a bit different to me from the website compared to when we saw it in Denver.

Well, on the plus side he did know his lines and lyrics.
..but he does sound like he has a clothes pin on his nose and many lines are definitely lost in his delivery.

Why would they put him in a great show, then? I would assume this would decrease ticket sales, but maybe since he's well known more people would go ...

yeah i guess... alot of pop "stars" are coming to broadway now... which sucks. I hate it when shows become commercial products.
But have a good weekend.. i heard BKLYN is awesome, i can't wait to see it

When we go to shows, my husband and I do go a little on the dressy side (a dress for me, and my husband will opt for a suit
It really does depend on the show, and if it is a n afternoon or evening performance.
Personally I feel there are so few occasions to get dressed up why not?

I would never wear jeans to a show, and think its sort of insulting when people do. The theatre used to be so respected. People dressed to the nines. Now we have kids in sponge bob pj pants. It's embarassing. And I think it's disrespectful to the cast, crew, etc. You can go casula, but at least wear khaki's or something. I never think people in dresses look out of place, unless its a prom dress or something. I went to a matinee yesterday and overall everyone was dressed well. Slacks, skirts, casual dresses. I only saw 2 or 3 people in jeans, and they just looked white trash. I guess the airbrushed trucker hats helped.

When I went to see Dracula last month, there was a wide variety of dress. There were these guys in top hats and capes, girls in prom dresses and tiaras, girls dressed like hookers, women who look like they're going to a tea party, casual people in jeans--- it depends.

I dress sort of casual- like, khakis and a nice shirt. The only time I've worn jeans to the theatre in the last year was when I didn't know I'd be seeing a show, so I felt REALLY bad wearing jeans.

We may dress up a bit since we hardly ever do here in Denver. We do for the theatre but not many in Denver do this.

You can't go wrong with business casual.

Personally, I disagree with the "no jeans" ban that some advocate. As long as they're not torn or mega-distressed.

Respect is shown in how you behave during the performance, both to the actors and your fellow audience-members.

aurora - please post your review and thoughts of both shows. I would like to know especially if you see any differences in Bklyn since you saw it in Denver.
