"You also think they have unfairly created a monopoly in Fire Island Pines property (as though anything related to Fire Island isn't directly connected to privilege and unfairness - from wealth inequity to body fascism - but whatever), and they're into younger guys one of whom OD'd in their apartment."
I didn't say they came about the monopoly unfairly: they were the high bidders in an auction. I meant that they were stupid to buy into a longstanding and tightly knit community and immediately do something as stupid as giving a platform and lending some supposed "gay credibility" to a legislator who wants to amend the U.S. Constitution to bar states from legalizing gay marriage.
And it's not just that a young guy "happened to OD in their apartment. A boy they knew to have a problem with drugs was invited there, fed large amounts of drugs, and when he started to OD, rather than call 911, they put him in the shower where he died.
They are the worst kind of gays. I don't think anyone will mind if they go bankrupt.
And I'm VERY surprised that Cruz's people didn't vet them. If he wanted to court wealthy gays, surely he could have looked around and found less sleazy ones.

"Let's invite notoriously anti-equality Ted Cruz to a private dinner at out home- where within the last year the public eye was drawn because a young man died of a drug overdose- to talk about Israel. What can go wrong?"
What was the outcome of this dinner supposed to be?

HorseTears,
Let me summarize my reactions, at which point I can hopefully think more about the theatre than about this.
1. When a politician comes to a state s/he does not represent, it is ALWAYS to raise money. Today, what politicians do for a living is raise money: read anything by Larry Lessig. Today, most money flows outside of the campaign finance laws: again, read Lessig,or just look at the Kochs or Sheldon Adelson.
2. Cruz is anti-gay to his bone. You can read plenty about this, some linked in this thread. His canard about the hypothetical child is from the Repulican playbook on the subject.
3. Mati and Ian were not interested in getting Cruz's ear on LGBT or AIDS issues; they wanted to solidify the nuances of his support of Israel.
4. The evil that warrants a boycott is not evidence that money changed hands, but that Cruz was given a networking opportunity. I assume you at least agree that he was. To relate this to the theatre, it is really no different than someone inviting potential investors and producing compadres to a party in the Hamptons this summer, something that will happen dozens of times this summer as it has in summers past, not so they could pull out checkbooks, but so that they are looped in to the following season's productions.
5. There are people who will consort with their natural enemies for a variety of reasons. There were jews who supported hitler. Politics makes strange bedfellows, but it is not out of line to call out those who make money off of one group and then use it to facilitate the enemies of that group. That, at its core, is at least evidenced here.

The Facebook page for Boycott Fire Island Pines Establishments & Out NYC Hotel already has 6,500 members.
During an average summer, the summer seasonal population of the Pines is between 2,500 and 3,000 people.
Even if people go into Tea, have pizza or have dinner at the restaurants, there will be buff boys in Speedos outside the establishments handing out fliers and educating patrons. There will be more of a party outside the Pavillion than inside.
The PR fallout here is beyond the disaster level. And I can't foresee a way that the two stupid sleazy rich guys can make it better.

Horsetears, you point to some causes Reisner and Weiderpass have supported which many of us also support, but you neglect to point out their fundraising for Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and their close ties to Rudy Giuliani.
So, if we're going to weigh their good faith versus the stench coming from this "reception and fireside chat" with this particular virulent right wing nut job, during the initial stages of his presidential campaign, we should have the whole context.
People should do and say whatever they want. People should support and mingle with whomever they want.
Personally I have no interest in supporting Reisner and Weiderpass's endeavors.
No oppressed community would gladly support businesses run by people who are so chummy with those who are among their and all oppressed communities' chief oppressors.
Excellent piece by Jay Michaelson from The Daily Beast (and, no it is not anti-Israel):

Henrik. Thanks for the beast article. Interesting mention of Michael lucas.
Also thanks to borstal boy for starting the thread. Important.
And what an interesting and thoughtful discussion. Thanks everybody.
An important point to me is why in the world would Ted Cruz take this meeting? He must have been convinced there was some plum in it for him. What could that be? Well just that question is enough to convince me that the boycott is worthwhile.
I agree, Huge ick factor.

Comden,
There is no question that this was a fundraising trip for Cruz: he doesn't have time to do anything but raise money. (He doesn't even have time to vote in the Senate, something he is paid to do.) It's hard to wrap our heads around how decimated the campaign finance laws are-they don't really exist any more. We have legal corruption. I mentioned Professor Lessig in a previous post. He was out front on this before anyone, but there is now a lot of scholarship emerging on the subject. And it is not a Republican issue; everyone is doing the same thing.
There is no short term fix for the problem, but boycotting businesses makes sense. I only wish they were producing a Broadway show so I could not go to see it!

I am shaken to my bones by the e-mails, texts, postings and phone calls of the past few days. I made a terrible mistake. I was ignorant, naive and much too quick in accepting a request to co-host a dinner with Cruz at my home without taking the time to completely understand all of his positions on gay rights. I've spent the past 24 hours reviewing videos of Cruz' statements on gay marriage and I am shocked and angry. I sincerely apologize for hurting the gay community and so many of our friends, family, allies, customers and employees. I will try my best to make up for my poor judgement. Again, I am deeply sorry.

I guess I'll give him credit for not doing a sorry-not-sorry kind of apology, but I'm still not buying it. What kind of gay person is a big enough idiot to not realize that Tes Cruz, whether for political or personal reasons, hates us? He is virulently and proudly anti-LGBTQ and shouldn't be supported by any gay person, regardless of his stance on other issues.
Personally, I'm so tired that this is even an issue anymore. Rights for LGBTQ people should not be up for debate- it's not a matter of opinion anymore. Not supporting us doesn't mean you don't agree, it means you are wrong and your views should not be tolerated or codified into law.

Omg this!
that was the one thing in the whole Jenner interview that I couldn't get over. That he sees no problem in being a republican.
If an immediate family member showed no empathy towards his life-long struggle he would surely drop them. But has no problem being a republican. Vapid is, indeed, the best description.

It's interesting what questions no one is asking. All the boycotts are well-founded, and frankly I support them on a moral level. But the question no one is asking is, why would Ted Cruz be hosting an event at what may possibly be the gayest club in America? And I do mean that... the club isn't exactly what one would call grounds for a more neutral audience. I am gay, a producer, and a very far left individual catering to a leftist audience and consumer base for my products, but even I have had concerns from a purely social science marketing statistics sort of viewpoint about doing events at the Out Hotel, as it might narrow down our audience base, which is 100 per cent gay sympathetic and gay supportive.
In short: the Out Hotel couldn't be more gay if it punctuated every sentence with a limp wrist, a hip thrust, and a prominent lisp. This is not where you book your "court the gay vote" event unless you're planning on coming across two other men coming across each other, to be blunt. Even a first-year intern wouldn't make so blatant a mistake. There are much safer ways to court the gay vote anyway, like donating to a myriad of wonderful charities revolving around health, image, the arts, shelters for LGBT youth... the list goes on.
The question is, barring a Dolce & Gabbana level of losing touch with reality, why would two gay male millionaires let Cruz book at their place of business? How would they have occasion to know him?
In my subjective opinion, Cruz was looking for some action, and I don't mean political. I wouldn't be shocked if it wasn't the first time. (I'll give you a hint: Ted Haggard. I'll give you another hint: Larry Craig.)

g.d.e.l.g.i., Cruz didn't host an event at the Out Hotel.
The Out Hotel owners hosted a reception for him at their home.
Reisner's apology is completely unbelievable - he didn't know Ted Cruz was so anti-gay? Yeah, right. He proudly taunts himself as a staunch and active supporter of gay rights for decades - which indeed he has been when it suits him - and he has no idea what Ted Cruz stands for when it comes to limiting our rights?
Good luck with that, Ian.
More importantly, Ian offers nothing in his defense about his fundraising on behalf of Ron Johnson who voted no on ENDA and who supported the amendment to the recent Human Trafficking Act which permitted the faith-based to not assist LGBT youth, who make up a huge part of the victims of human trafficking.
I will still be at today's demonstration.
I hope I see many of you there as well.

The Cruz "fundraiser" wasn't at the Out Hotel or XL. It was at the Central Park South duplex the guys live in.
Y'know, the one where a coupla months ago they invited a kid over for drugs and sex and let him OD in the shower without calling 911.

Facebook poster Christopher Rawlins cataloged the 5 lies in the public statements of Ian Reisner and Mati Weiderpass:
===
The Lies of Ian Reisner and Mati Weiderpass
Lie #1: Reisner did not know Ted Cruz' knuckle-dragging views on gay human beings. Except that in his first statement, he expresses that he understands Cruz' views, but that his priority is Israel.
Lie #2: Reisner says his dinner for a senator and his wife, in the midst of a Presidential campaign, wasn't a fundraiser. Except that Ted Cruz called it a fundraiser.
Lie #3: Mati Weiderpass claimed that Cruz' visit just sort of happened.Cruz was nearby for a New York Athletic Club Fundraiser and just popped in afterwards. Happily, Weiderpass and Reisner were able to have a caterer, a publicist, and a New York Times photographer all set to go by the time Cruz and his wife rode up the elevator.
Lie #4: Reisner did not organize the dinner, he was merely a guest at his own apartment. That claim is "no longer operative," as Nixon's aides would say. He now admits he organized and co-hosted this dinner.
Lie #5. Reisner hosted a Ready for Hillary event recently, which he mentioned to imply equivalence between his Ted Cruz dinner and his Clinton event. Except that Reisner does not appear anywhere in the literature for the Clinton event. He just rented a space in his hotel.
I'm really tired of having my intelligence insulted by these arrogant, duplicitous, and foolish people.
I would respect them more if they just came out with it and said "Hey, we don't care about human rights for the little people because we're 'A' gays and nothing really touches us anyhow. Hell, a 23 year-old died of an overdose in our bathtub a few months ago and nothing came of that! All this talk of principles and loyalty to our customers is so tiresome. Can't you just shut up and sip your cocktails while we conspire with Judeo-Christian theocrats to bomb Iran?"

Ted Cruz has openly campaigned against Gay Marriage. In a letter this month to thousands of pastors across the country, Mr. Cruz asked them to lead prayer services on April 28, when the justices hear arguments on same-sex marriage:
Ted Cruz's letter:
1) Preach about biblical marriage on Sunday, April 26.
We know that marriage is intended to be sacred, beautiful, and nourishing. If you do not influence your congregation’s understanding of marriage, who will fill the void? Hollywood? Divorce courts?
2) Lead prayer services on Tuesday, April 28.
Prayer moves our God to intervene in history. Prayer softens our hearts and brings us into alignment with the heart of God. The church has not shared the truth about marriage well: it is time to repent and commit ourselves to courage on this front.
Regardless of what happens in the Supreme Court, or anywhere else, we know that the truth will never be obsolete. The union of man and woman in marriage will always be relevant. People will continue to need marriage, and to desire it – because we are made in the image of God, creatures who value authentic companionship and intimate connection.
That leaves us only one question. Will we be on the right side of history, the side occupied by the Author of history? Otherwise we will fall victim to the fashions of the times.
Will we discard an institution, ordained by God, which has brought so much stability and happiness to the human family? Or will we stand in its support? Rightly or wrongly, the Supreme Court will take a stand on marriage this summer. Let’s take ours now.
God bless America,
Senator Ted Cruz
My brother and his partner have been together for 20 years, were married as soon as it was legal in New York State. They consider their marriage sacred, beautiful and nourishing.
So, I take this disgusting letter of Cruz's very personally. He's anti-family values as far as I'm concerned.
Reisner and Weiderpass knew Cruz's position on all of this, then they hosted a fundraiser for Cruz. Disgusting.
