Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 9/5

What does the size of the theater have to do with Night Music's success? It's playing the Kerr because it's a chamber production (for better or worse, depending on your point of view). I just don't see why that makes the fact that two Broadway stars are selling the show any less significant.

The shows mentioned that play in larger theaters all have a much wider audience pool (read: families) than Night Music. The family of 4 visiting from Peoria is much more likely to see Wicked than they are Night Music.

I just don't see why pointing out it's in a smaller house makes their strong numbers any less wonderful.

Next week will give us more of an indication, though. Expect the numbers to absolutely plummett for most shows except the war horses.

justaguy--not sure if you know this, but from i understand, karine and rika went to twyla almost three years ago to start creating CFA.

i really don't think there would have been a workshop in between atlantic city and new york.

Wayman_Wong you make some valid points and you may well be correct about AI and their desire for a large house. I still maintain that CFA would have benefited from waiting for a smaller venue. Would Movin' Out have been as successful in the Marquis?

And just to clarify, my question about "what is with the 1600+ theatres" was not directed towards you or the comment about ALNM. It was a question to the producers of AI and CFA.

Bethnor, I do know about the beginnings of CFWM/CFA. I see your point, but I also know the show was supposed to tour in 2010 and then head to Broadway in 2011. I know this because I know from an insider that the show was all but booked for Toronto for the summer of 2010. It was even rumored in the Toronto Star:

But after the Times review it was decided to move to New York right away and the only Nederlander theatre that was available was the Marquis. If the show had gone out on tour then I think Twyla and co. would have been able to further refine the storytelling and the shape of the show prior to NY. Don't get me wrong, I loved the show but I know that the narrative was criticized. Mostly though I think it would have allowed them to go into a more appropriate theatre. The Marquis needs a show with broad appeal and spectacle like Sister Act or Priscilla. We'll see how Wonderland fairs. In my opinion, they should have waited for a smaller theatre. I saw the show in Atlanta when I was there on business last fall and I felt that the show was more engaging in the smaller space. The dance and the music was spectacular in both venues and the show was wonderful in both places but I think it worked better in the smaller space. My opinion.

At any rate, it's all water under the bridge now. Hopefully it will have a good life on the road and with any luck the Vegas rumor will turn out to be real and I'll be booking a trip to Sin City to see it again.

I'm standing by my reasoning that AMERICAN IDIOT chose the St. James because of the coincidence of the St. Jimmy character.
