Well, if you really want to get into the weeds, the plays as performed in Shakespeare's time wouldn't have had 'period appropriate sets and costumes' - they would have been performed in what would have been contemporary dress (as historical accuracy wasn't really a concern until closer to the Victorian era) and they wouldn't have had much of a set at all.
