Posted: 11/3/05 at 3:00pmI know this thread was started a while back, but I thought it was time for a fresh start. Now while I'm more a fan of the stage... there are certain shows I think would be great movies. My vote definitely goes to You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown- the more I think about it, the transition would be great. We've never had a live action peanuts movie, and what better than that?!

I'd LOVE to see a really well made film of "Phantom of the Opera".
Oh well.

Posted: 11/3/05 at 4:12pmif they reworked Dance of the Vampires so that it worked on film and was possibly a bit more serious, i think it could be amazing.

I'm still putting my vote in for Les Mis and Sweeney - those are just BEGGING to be made as movies!
I also think City of Angels has HUGE potential to be a great movie.

Sweeney Todd (always a rumor)
Grand Hotel (with killer art direction)
Nine (on location in Venice)
(A faithful version of) Brigadoon (shot on location in Scotland)
Merrily We Roll Along
Wicked (with a full-on "Lord of the Rings"-scale production value)
Dreamgirls (yeah, I know it's happening)
City of Angels (using Pleasantville-type effects)
The Light in the Piazza (on location in Florence, naturally)
Sunday in the Park With George (shot in and around modern Paris, and re-creating Paris of the 1880s)
Les Miserables
Ragtime
Into the Woods

Posted: 11/3/05 at 6:58pmYes, a remake. I am still trying to forget the original. I still don't understand how they messed up such great material. But yes, a good version needs to happen soon.

I would love to see Assassins just because it is amazing material, but I cannot imagine how they would do it. This isn't a show that lends itself to a realistic setting. It would take an incredible director to do this well.
But if done right it could be brilliant.

NIGHT MUSIC was filmed and shown on PBS in its first NYCO incarnation in 1990 as well, with Sally Ann Howes (Truly Scrumptious in the CCBB movie) as Desiree, George Lee Andrews (Phantom Of The Opera) as Fredrik, Regina Resnik as madame Armfeldt, Michael Maguire (Tony winner for Les Miz) as Count Carl Magnus, Maureen Moore (Bernadette Peters standby in Gypsy) as Charlotte, Beverly Lambert (OBC Nine) as Anne, Susan Terry (a replacement Oolie in city Of Angels) as Petra, and our beloved Original Little Red, Dannielle Ferland, as Fredrika.
I have seen a copy of it. If you can find it, WATCH IT! It is phenomenal!

Posted: 11/3/05 at 7:43pmPassion with the original cast. Didn'y sondheim say in the commentary that it would be fun to make a movie of Passion and film it in central park? I think that would be pretty awesome, but maybe not central park, I was thinking more somewhere in Italy.

Yes, I have the 1990 PBS "Great Performances" of Night Music as well. It is excellent all around, and puts the movie with Liz Taylor to shame. And to think Hal Prince directed it! This is why he stuck to the stage. But I would LOVE to see it set in Sweden and filmed there (and can't figure out for the life of me why they switched countries in the movie). The perpetual twilight would be great cinematically.
And they could bring back the Liedersingers and "The Millers Son" and everything else they took out of the movie (for all the wrong reasons).
As far as ASSASSINS, I would love to see a film as well.. but it would be very difficult to swallow. The Balladeer role, and the disjointed settings would have to be conceived in an unusual way to work on screen. You need someone crazy like Baz Luhrman to reimagine it for the movies.

I'd love to see movie of the 1998 revival versions of Cabaret.
Wicked. (But I think I would lean more toward seeing the screenplay based on the book.)
And, I'd also love to see a version of Little Shop where they didn't eff up the ending.

If I had my druthers as far as "Wicked" there would be a wildly expensive "Lord of the Rings"-scale movie of the musical, and a deeply intense television mini-series based on the book. You would need a mini-series (8-10 hours) to tell the novel's story successfully. I'll bet you this will come in the next 10-15 years or so. "Wicked"s going to be around in many forms for a long, long time to come.
God, can I wait that long?
