Broadway Stars and Agents: How Do They Work Together?
#1Broadway Stars and Agents: How Do They Work Together?
Posted: 3/27/07 at 6:58pmHello. I'm curious about this question. How does the professional relationship work between stars and their agents? For example, I'm surmising that Patti LuPone has a pretty good agent (whoever that might be...). She's done numerous shows and concerts and has kept herself busy. Is it a combination of efforts between artists and agents, that helps an artist land a role? Who are some of the better known agents? I have no idea what the dynamic is between the artist and the agent. Perhaps someone out there can shed some light on this subject. from Roman in Austin, Texas... the official Patti LuPone FANatic

Not exactly. An agent focuses on getting you jobs, a manager works on building a career. There are always exceptions, but that's the basic formula.
An actor can also have different agents for theater, concerts, TV/film, commercials, voiceover, etc.

So which one is in charge of making sure there are only green M&Ms in your dressing room (which must be painted mauve, of course) and that the fruit plates contain no papaya or kiwi? And which one walks your pugs while you're onstage?
Seriously, though, thank you for that simple, clear explanation. It actually cleared up some questions I've always had too. You're the best, Rath!

The manager takes care of the green M&M painting, and your assistant walks the pugs.
And you're welcome.
