Elaine Stritch first sang on a Broadway stage in 1947, nearly 56 years ago!
A revue called ANGEL IN THE WINGS.
She had the hit of the evening with a song, "Civilazation," where she sang "Bongo, Bongo, Bongo, I don't want to leave the Congo." A funny song if you haven't heard it.
Yours for a better Broadway!

Very true. When was the last time you saw the wonderful Julie Harris on Broadway however?
Elaine Stritch was there just last year.
Yours for real stars on Broadway!

How are you determining who is appropraite to this list? There are people mentioned here who have been dead for many yaers and some who are still around but have not been on a stage in years. If you go strictly by people who have recently been on a Broadway stage and strtch recently to maen within the past 2-3 years, the list dwindles.
Sorry, i'm just a stickler for precise criteria which is measurable...which may once again bring us back to Rex Smith

"TGC. She began her career in the early 50's and is planning to bring AN EVENING WITH CAROL CHANNING to Broadway this season."
Wasn't this originally going to be called "An Evening With Carol Channing and her walker"?

Posted: 8/8/03 at 8:15pmWell I'm not really sure if you mean "longest" as in "if you added up their time in each show how long is it" or simply who has had a Broadway presence the longest regardless of the time spent in shows. Either way, I guess...Julie Andrews has spent her fair share of time on Broadway. Starting with "The Boy Friend" in 1954 up to Victor/Victoria in 1995. And thought its not exactly Broadway...her recent stint as a director in the BayStreet production of "The Boy Friend" was good to hear about. I'm sure if she could still sing she'd be on stage in some capacity to this day. It still breaks my heart to think of..

Posted: 8/9/03 at 11:41amJulie Harris, who is one of the greatest actresses of the century, has been touring. She has been offered several chances to return to Broadway, but apparently would rather tour. I believe she was considered for Frau Schneider in the revival of Cabaret, but since she had been Broadway's original Sally Bowles even before there was a Cabaret, she decided not to pursue it.

Posted: 8/9/03 at 12:00pmOne name that seems to appear every year in the New York Times that she is a play is Cherry Jones. So that is my vote for longest running actress.

Posted: 8/9/03 at 11:07pmCheryl, Marian Seldes also held the Guiness Book of World Records title for longest continuous performer in a role (I haven't checked the book recently, maybe she still does). I believe she played the entire run of Deathtrap without calling in sick or taking a vacation. She must have either really loved the part or needed the money really badly.
