Clay Aiken's arrival in Spamalot inspired the writer on the Best Week Ever blog to put together their list of "Eff-it points" (stunt casting) for Broadway Shows.
Their Young Frankenstein entry was funny, but definitely a little harsh. Taken with a grain of salt, what do you guys think?
Any other notable "eff-it" points spring to mind?

i have a couple-
Ashley Parker Angel and Lance Bass in Hairspray
Donny Osmund in Beauty and the Beast
Lina Rinna and Harry Hamlin in Chicago (along with the other 4, 500 replcements in that show....but I fell for this one, and I wasted my $62.)

Posted: 1/24/08 at 8:46pmHe fails to recognize that some of the performers he mentioned were actually very, very good in their roles. And of alllllllll the people from Chicago he could have chosen, he chose Wayne Brady????? Seriously??? He had a treasure trove to pick from with some of those Roxie Harts they've had (Melanie Griffith anyone?), but he chose Brady?

I know I'll probably get murdered for this, but whatever....
I honestly think, sometimes. stunt casting can work. That is, if the producers and the performer don't take themselves too seriously with it.
For example: I think it would be a great idea for Grease stunt cast "Teen Angel". Not for a long period of time, maybe a week. I think it would be really funny for that ice cream to pop open and see, say, Conan O'Brien in the white suit. Frankie Avalon would be funny as well.
Like I said, not a serious cast. But it would be hilarious to see some of the people they could get.

Posted: 1/24/08 at 11:15pmStunt casting has worked before. For every Melanie Griffith, there is a Reba McEntire. For every Scary Spice, there was a Fantasia. You get the idea.

Posted: 1/25/08 at 11:12amThe Weisslers famously stunt-cast Teen Angel in the last revival of GREASE. Every former teen idol/rock star from the 50s and 60s was trotted out and HUGE ads trumpeted their arrival. Seemed to help keep that awful thing alive.

“Lead Role In a Broadway Musical” falls somewhere between “Surreal Life Houseguest” and “Playing Spoons On The Sidewalk”.

I saw the Grease tour in 2004 here in Chicago. I got to see Frankie Avalon as the "teen angel" I was 9 so I didn't have a clue who he was except for him being in the movie.

What do you think about how reality shows like American Idol have changed the world's idea of what singing actually is? Singers are judged by how they look, selling their "sob story" and how well they can scream belt a song whilst gyrating or having wardrobe malfunctions; the more the better.
It seems that many legit singers who actually sing on pitch cannot get jobs anymore because casting agents are only looking for the belt til you bleed screamers.

Usher? excuse me while I puke.
I got a better performance that night from the saxophone player than from Usher. Are you kidding me? If that boy were any more off-target he would have been perfect for a toothpaste ad.

Posted: 2/4/08 at 10:33pmYou are Wrong-y McWrong, Mayor of Wrongville. Usher was incredible---his dancing was so fluid, and his singing was his usual good stuff. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time because I kinda/sorta wanted him to screw up, because I could tell he wasnt super familiar with the lines........but no he didn't mess up. I wasnt a big Usher fan and I'm still not, but he was good in CHICAGO.

Though it never happend, just the talk of Britney Spears taking over the lead in Sweet Charity was enough to make me almost vomit.
Plus the talk of Mario Lopez possibly in A Chorus Line.
