You wanna see how badly a show can be trashed, wait for John Simon's review on Monday in New York Magazine. I've been reading him since I was a kid (he's been a major critic since before I was born) and he deserves his reputation as the harshest and nastiest critic probably in the history of New York Theatre. His pans are legendary. He's a horrible racist, sexist, homophobic man, but nevertheless a great writer with an enormous vocabulary -- he knows more ways of saying he thought something was awful than anyone on the planet.
He's old, mean, bitter and hates rock and roll -- Brooklyn doesn't stand a chance with him.

It's okay to stick up for a show you believe in. Even minority viewpoints count, as long as you don't get malicious about it.

I was anxious to read reviews for BKLYN but then I remembered something: reviews seriously mean nothing. I mean, look at Wicked's reviews, then look at its attendance record and grosses. The reviews obviously have no significant effect on the success of a show...

People need to stop comparing this show to Wicked. Every show is different. Geez.

I'm not comparing it to Wicked. I'm just using Wicked as an example of a show that received mediocre reviews at best, and is still doing amazingly well. All I'm saying is that Wicked proves that just because a show doesn't get good reviews doesn't mean it can't do well.

I coulda sworn that other people panned BKLYN too. Humm,let me go back and read Theatermania, Peter Filichia, the New York Times, Broadway.com, Talkin Broadway(not to mention posts by others who saw it)again.

Pan Shman lol... As long as shows have ticket sales down the road they will be fine as BKLYN does. (Bombay Dreams,Wonderful Town,Dracula) all would of closed by now had people listened to what they read. As I recall the "late" Saturday Night Fever lasted almost 2 years on broadway after being TORN apart and that theatre was HUGE.

But the thing about Fever was that it had a huge upteen million dollar advance, that and Orfeh kept the show running alot longer than it would have/could have/should have. Its advance *made* it critic proof. I will agree with Amneris about one thing, if Dracula is still running....

it makes me snicker with delight that that's basically what I posted on Monday after seeing the show last weekend and I was challenged for not knowing anything and asked "what have you ever written?"
sometimes an education in musical theatre serves its purpose.
wow, this all sounds so conceited. so not me, but hey, I'm tired of getting walked over and its moments like that (reading reviews that reflect your own opinion and make you feel like you know something) that help to make all the freakin' money spent on that musical theatre degree a little more worth it, lol.
I'm done gloating now. It's really ugly. Sorry bout that.

Same was true of Saturday Night Fever though it ultimately had a money-losing run on Broadway of one year and two months, not two years.
