Broadway.com's on the scene with the new "For Now" lyric in Avenue Q

I just watched Broadway.com's on the scene where they were with the cast and some of the puppets of Avenue Q where they announced the new lyric. They sing all of them back to back in the rehearsal clips. I must say that the only one that is funny on paper but not so much when it is sung is the your mother in law line.

The actor playing Brian said that at first he didn't like "this show is only for now." But, then he realized that no show lasts forever.

I'm still for the choice being "Prop 8" not only because of the social implications that I stated on the other thread (if someone in the audience is actually clueless to what it is and hears everyone else cheering around them, maybe they'll go home and educate themselves) but also because it was the most crisp and easy to understand when they yelled it out.

I don't like the use of Prop 8 because it's not funny, but it sounds the best in the video.

I'd prefer something else, but only "this show" was actually a funny choice.

This is why we don't leave lyric writing up to the general public. re: Broadway.com's on the scene with the new 'For Now' lyric in Avenue Q

"Your mother-in-law" is very funny, but it sounds so rushed. If I didn't know that's what they were saying, it would be indeciferable.

kchenofan's computer is broken right now. This is her fridge. Now, you can leave a message, but say it slowly, so I can write it on a post-it note and stick it to myself.

"This show" to the average theater goer (read: tourist) may sound like they're just stating "This show (will be over after this song)."

I don't think that its going to have the broad connotation of meaning "This show (if it gets the axe like the myriad of others that did within the past 3 weeks)."

Logan, while I agree with your point how some audience may misinterpret "this show," either interpretation is still funnier than the others, especially considering how rushed "your mother-in-law" is. However, am I the only one that didn't here "this show" during the video during the rehearsal section. Maybe I'm just deaf.

re: Broadway.com's on the scene with the new 'For Now' lyric in Avenue Q

I have to change what I said in another thread about the potential choice for "prop 8 is only for now." I had said that it might not work due to the fact that Avenue Q has an audience of varying political opinions. But, after watching the video I found out that the Bush line originally got laughs because prior to the Tonys it had mostly a New York audience who tended to be very liberal. However, after the Tonys when they got more tourists into the theatre to see the show they were laughing for a different reason. The people who were in the audience who were laughing who were more right wing because they understood that even though they liked Bush he was very unpopular and there were more people who didn't like him then there were people who did.

I guess what I am trying to say is that even though there might be people who might not like the prop 8 line due to their political views, they still might be able to find humor in it the same way people who were pro bush found humor in the original line in the song.

But, on the other hand I am not sure that it would work since hopefully it would get overturned sometime soon.

I did like your mother in law is only for now. But, after hearing it sung I realized that it was an idea that sounded good on paper, it just wasn't a good idea when it was sung.

Prop 8 is still a terrible choice. it's NOT funny and NOT known to many tourists. I can promise you that.

Recession is BORING.

Mother-In-Law does not fit and sounds terrible and rushed.

This Show is the funniest and fits very nicely. Too bad they didn't do it at the press rehearsal. I like it the most.

I mean... they're all bad choices anyway. It's sad that they used this contest as a way for more publicity. It makes them stuck choosing some poor options. Marx and Lopez SHOULD have just done their own. Who would know if anyone actually had submitted it??? Just do it under the table. Quietly.

Prop 8 was THE second biggest national news story on election night. People will know what it is - partly because it is so controversial. It also fits the whole spirit of the show. Not to mention it fits musically. I can see the cast really getting into delivering it the same way they did George Bush. It seems like they really sold it in the rehearsal video.

This Show isn't nearly as topical and won't get the emotional response/cheers that something like Prop 8 will get. I also don't think it's funny. It's kind of sad, actually. I can't see anyone cheering it, which is the desired response, I would think.

Look at the BWW poll. Prop 8 leads by more than 100% over This Show. Pretty indicative of audience response, I'd say.

People didn't cheer for "George Bush" because they supported him, they cheered because the line "is only for now" preceded it. The same would happen with "Prop 8." People will cheer to affirm that it is, in fact, only "for now."

You keep saying that, but the line isn't necessarily supposed to be FUNNY.

People weren't laughing like "ha ha ha we're stuck with George Bush for 4 more years, but its only for now." They were cheering because it affirmed their view of him being a terrible president.

It's not supposed to be a line that just tickles your funny bone, it's a line which makes a social commentary on something that sucks right now but should be the end is in plain sight.
