New theatres have changed the size order over the past several years. When GYPSY opened at the Broadway Theatre in May, 1959 it was the largest legit theatre and had the largest stage area. When GYPSY(with Merman) moved to the Imperial Theatre in 1960, the smaller stage area necessitated the use of a smaller # of show girls in the wonderfully garish "Minsky's Salute to Christmas" number just before "Rose's Turn". Incidentally, the Minsky's Christmas # was far funnier than the "Garden of Eden" number in all susequent revivals. I have seen all NYC productions of GYPSY and feel that Arthur Laurents made a mistake in switching the staging of the Minsky's #.
"Madam Rose...and her daughter...Gypsy!"
