re: Broadway house size

Isn't the Marquis up there?
But when did New Hampshire become--Such a backward wasteland of seatbelt hating crazies?...I mean, only 40 people actually live there. The others are just visitors who come for the tax-free liquor and three inches of novelty coastline. John Hodgeman on The Daily Show (1-30-07)

re: Broadway house size

The Marquis is 7th, right under the Minskoff at 6th.

Edit: The Majestic is at 8th right now, but was at 7th when Woman in White was open at the Marquis cause they removed a few seats for the Lloyd Webber musical.

re: Broadway house size

The Gershwin has 1940 seats
The Hilton has 1815

So #1 is the Gershwin
#2 is the Hilton

re: Broadway house size

I'd say the Gershwin is larger simply for the space outside the actual seating area! That place is like a giant barn!

re: Broadway house size

Well as far as just huge, I think the New Amsterdam has more square feet.

re: Broadway house size

Wicked took out the theatre's front row, AA, and also selected seats from the sides of the orchastra. Hence the reason for the number change.

re: Broadway house size

Munk, my order was the same as yours, except you forgot the Minskoff. Let's not forget it even though there is no show currently there.

re: Broadway house size

The Palace actually has 1706 seats. Lestat didnt use the balcony which gave it a total of 1591 seats.
#15

re: Broadway house size

Numbers do change because when Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was at the Hilton Theater, they removed seats from the balcony for a sound or light booth. Those seats were placed back for Hot Feet.

"The Palace actually has 1706 seats."

Yes, that's true. I was basing my numbers on current shows.
#18

re: Broadway house size

Yes, me too. The numbers - mostly with musicals - always change, but the order will generally stay the same.

Sorry about the Minskoff!

The Palace did, in fact use the balcony for LESTAT...where did you get that it didn't?

re: Broadway house size

The Gershwin interior was redone several years ago and that is when they lost 130+ seats. At the time, the theatre had never had a long-running sell-out hit.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

re: Broadway house size

Was there a reason Lion King changed theatres? maybe for a smaller house capacity, and a larger one for Mary Poppins?

re: Broadway house size

From what I understand, it's because the Minskoff isn't a Disney theatre, and they wanted to open up the newest Disney show in a Disney theatre. They decided to move Lion King instead of Beauty and the Beast because the Lunt-Fontaine is smaller than the Minskoff, so Beauty and the Beast would probably suffer money-wise. I could be wrong though.

re: Broadway house size

If MP flops, Disney doesn't lose as much because it owns the theater. Lion King will do well anywhere.

re: Broadway house size

Well its really becasue Lion King is not selling out anymore, its usually only at 60% and sometimes goes up to 80%. So they'll make the most money the way their doing it with the new show in the biggest theater.
#24

re: Broadway house size

Lion King has been 90%-over 100% nearly the whole year... It has only been in the 60%s once this year..

re: Broadway house size

^ You are right. It's more prone to close-to-sold out.
How to properly use its/it's: Its is the possessive. It's is the contraction for it is...
