So I know a billion threads have been posted like this before where people are asking which show they should see when they go to NYC.
This isn't my first time in the city, and I already have tickets to Aladdin and The King and I. I would like to see one more show while I'm there. Something new and refreshing and exciting, since I'm already going to see two "traditional" Broadway shows (for lack of a better term).
I guess I regretted it back in 2013 when I was in the city and kept seeing ads for this new show called "Kinky Boots", now that musical is a hit and I wish I would have seen it then!
My ideas: Hamilton, Curious Incident, Fun Home (if I can get tickets of course)....
Which one should I go with? Other suggestions??
Thanks so much!!
Your chances of getting tickets to Hamilton and Fun Home are very slim, but you should definitely enter the lotteries! If you're looking for something new and refreshing and exciting then Hand to God or Curious Incident if you want to see a play. Matilda, Hedwig, or Kinky Boots if you want to see a musical.
I'd definitely recommend Curious incident, also Hand to God was great. If you can get a ticket to Fun Home then see that- but I'd book a ticket now. Enjoy!
Unless you buy them NOW, getting tickets for Hamilton in August are gonna be quite difficult and pricey. I would say Fun Home, but if you are unable to get tickets choose between Matilda, Kinky, or Curious Incident. It depends if you like musicals more than plays and if you're looking for a nice night out or a show that will do things to your insides. Luckily Fun Home, Matilda, Kinky, and Curious all have amazing books and will have you leaving the theater in tears. So I would choose between those four and narrow it down, good luck!
One thing to track is the Hamilton secondary market, as a good chunk of Hamilton tickets for every show are on StubHub. Obviously, they will all be ridiculously overpriced this far out... but there is a good chance that on the day, some price fluidity may enter the picture and they will start coming down.
Also, for Hamilton, start tracking a few key things in advance, since they are sold on Ticketmaster which usually sets certain things very specifically on a daily basis:
- When are handicapped seats converted to regular seats if they haven't sold?
- When are house seats released?
- And when do unsold premium seats, if they exist, convert to regular price (that is usually either 90 or 65 minutes to showtime, although online sales go off 60 minutes to showtime, so if it is 65, you have to complete your transaction within those 5 minutes)
You didn't mention a budget issue, so Fun Home premiums may still exist this far out for your dates. If you can lock that in, I'd say do it. Otherwise, Taye Diggs in Hedwig may be something paying attention to next week, and as he progresses in the role...
You can easily get tix for Curious Incident -- and it's wonderful.
Fun Home might be difficult, but not impossible to get tix for, depending on your available date. There are no bad seats in that theater. Also wonderful, and had an entirely different tone than the other shows you are seeing.
Tix for Hamilton will be the most fifficult/and expensive option, but it's setting the world on its ear!
Hand to God I'd another great choice, but not for everyone.
Keep in mind that Fun Home has SRO tickets for sold out shows. It's in a small theater and under 2 hours so a pretty good SRO option. It's an extraordinary show.
