Anyone going this year? I have never been and just discovered the website online. Looks like a really great event. I wish I could photograph it, but it looks like 50,000 people show up, so I know I wont get any good photos stuck in a mob crowd.
anyone gone in the past? is it fun? how early do you usually arrive to get up front?

Posted: 8/25/08 at 4:00pmI found it fun when I was much younger...now it's just a bunch of "stand up for 4 hours and see the same songs each show does every year."

I find Broadway on Broadway to be a much more miserable experience than Broadway in Bryant Park, personally. There is a ton more people, in a much smaller space, (eta: smaller space of course being a relative term in relation to closeness to the stage- the crowd itself goes back for *blocks*), and not to mention the whole lining up elsewhere and then being penned in to the sections of Broadway as the street gets closed down for the event factor. And each show performs exactly one number.

yeah i hear ya... i wish BWW would let me photograph the event so I could get up close without having to endure the inconvenience of the crowds, etc. I contacted them recently expressing interest in covering events on their behalf but i never heard back from anyone.
its tough to get yourself known as a photographer.

Posted: 8/26/08 at 9:24amI was thinking about going but I never realized that many people show up. What time would you have to get there to at least get a good enough spot to see?

I used to go every year during high school and I would usually get there about 2 hours before it started and be in the first or second area, but from what I understand, the crowds have grown each year, so I don't know how early you'd have to get there.
I used to love this event, but I'm just not into standing around for hours in a huge crowd anymore. It can be really fun though, so I would definitely encourage anyone who's never been to attend, and I really wish they still aired it on tv.

Posted: 8/26/08 at 3:50pmDo you think they are going to do that costume thing again like they did last year? They were advertising it for a few weeks before broadway on broadway last year, and I haven't seen anything about it yet for this year.

kcd - you should be able to hear everything because there are speakers further back, and you can probably even see it since there's a large screen (there might have been several screens, it's been a while)
martini - it's a concert in Times Square in which musicals that are currently running or are opening on broadway soon perform one song from their show.
