Here's the sad part. Many, if not most, people will view this as as "Oh how innovative, they know how to hustle, how productive!". They shouldn't HAVE to do this. They shouldn't have to suddenly scramble out of desperation just to be able to afford basic human necessities. It's the same when I see stories like I one I recall about a class raising money/inventing a device to help their sick classmate because he (ie his parents) couldn't get him the care he needed. It's disgusting to have to rely on that or on friggin' fundraisers just to get by and take care of yourself. A friend who does Santa gigs every year of course had to turn to doing virtual like many have...but he's literally working almost 24/7. While I've always found his entrepreneurial spirit admirable especially as he's good at it, I literally wondered "where's your break to just...eat lunch or breath??". Many of us had to talk him down from a ledge of the feeling of inferiority at having to deliver pizza for a while because of his hard work at hopefully never to turn to doing that (I quote) but like...that's capitalism run amok for you. It leaves the 99% out in the cold in dire straits and desperate. This is where it left most of us in the US even before this trash year. And it frustrates me to no end that suggesting that having better social safety nets is perceived as some sort of "socialist tyranny"

Choosing a career in the arts is always a risk, it's a very hard field, only a fraction of people actually make it as professionals, and they are used to long stretches without work. They know how to hussle and do other things. They are smart, talented, and extremely creative, they'll be okay.  I obviously hope Congress helps them through this but considering the GOP is a cruel embarrassment to this country, I doubt it.
