Here are a handful big "pop" hits from the '50s.

Hey There (Pajama Game) - Rosemary Clooney
Standin' on the Corner (Most Happy Fella) - The Four Lads
Santa Baby (New Faces of 1952) - Eartha Kitt
Just in Time (Bells Are Ringing) - Dean Martin

"Middle-aged? Oh God."

I'm basing this soley on the first-hand experiences I've had talking to be father, uncles, and all thier friends. And they are indeed middle-aged.

Actually, you would be surprised at how many people know seasons of love and let me give you some examples. I was at more than a couple Bar Mitzvah's and this was one of the songs they played at the end. Next, I went to this club in Brooklyn and heard the dance remix of Seasons of Love. Also - the movie has made this song more mainstream, and went I handforced by friends into the Rent theatre they kept saying, "wait a second I know this song."

It's mainstream. Please do not judge me by this screen name. It is my screen name because it was the first show I ever saw back in 96' since than I have seen plenty...well tons. Trust me those this is mainstream.

I made a list of all your faults, it was quite detailed and lengthy too and when I read it through I missed you. Your like a classic Eagles song, you just cant help but sing along even though it sometimes gets annoying too. I just know I want to be wherever I can wake and see you there next to me. **High Fidelity** Love is what I do **The Wedding Singer** Xanadu - Best NEW Musical of the Season!

Maybe the song is recongnizable. But mainstream? I really don't think so.

Mainstream means that a vast majority of the public knows it. Mainstream is Beyonce. Not one guy friend I know, knows "Seasons of Love". Not one. But I know they all know Beyonce.

Has anyone on this thread ever turned on a radio? The older show-tunes were actually popular. Rent and Wicked are not even close.

It's true, many of the show tunes from the 40's and 50's were big radio hits. Sinatra alone must have covered a few dozen. I'm not pickin' on you renthead2, but you mentioned Bar Mitzvas and a club in Brooklyn. The age of the Bar Mitzvah is 13 ( I think), so the dj played it for the "young, teen group" and again the club is in NY. Mainsteam means most of the country. Most of my friends don't know this song, and I'm 35 and from NYC. I don't even think the movie helped people know the score more. I. personally liked the film, Chris Columbus was fairly faithful to the show, but box office money wise, the movie was a flop. Compared to mainstream movies, and even Chicago (which got alot of people to see it because of the "Oscar buzz"), Rent did terrible at the box office.

I think "hopelesly devoted to you" was from the movie. I don't think it's from the show. Correct me if I'm wrong, cause I'm not 100% on that. PS....another big hit..."that old devil moon" = finian's rainbow.

Noonfreak, you are correct. It was from the movie. I've seen stage productions since then that have put that song in, but in the original Broadway version, nada!

Anybody who was in junior high or older in 1985 knew One Night In Bancock.

The most recent songs to cross over into mainstream pop radio were "Memory" (which was popularized by Barbra Streisand) and (yes) "One Night in Bangkok" (which I remember hearing incessently on the radio when I was kid, before I knew anything about B'way-- although I don't consider my self middle-aged (LOL))

I'm confused... wasn't this supposed to be about hits? ...As in songs that actually went up the Pop charts?

Not just "songs that everyone knows."

There is a difference. Many of these listed are "standards" and known as theatre songs, but they weren't actual "hits."

EDIT: Never mind. The original post just wants songs that are familiar to everyone. So... Let the debate continue!
