I can't believe no one has said Jennifer Holliday doing "And I Am Telling You" from Dreamgirls! The number was actually supposed to be a part of the first Lost Treasures, and was played on some PBS stations, because it was cut at the last second. Then it didn't show up on either I or II. It makes me sad.

LT3 is PROBABLY in the works.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I have very fond memories of the '68 Tonys with Jerry Orbach singing "She Likes Basketball" and the incredible "Turkey Lurkey" number (although after seeing CAMP I don't know if I could ever take it seriously again) and the wonderful "Life Is" from ZORBA. And the year that Debbie Allen did an electrifying couple of minutes from "America" in WEST SIDE STORY. I've always wanted to see "Fifty Percent" and the "Chorus Line" segment. Basically ANYTHING before 1983.

So much I'd like to see, mainly from the 70's (I have tapes of all of the ceremonies from 1980 to today, not 1982 though).

From the seventies...
I Got Love (Purlie)
You Can Dance/I Want to Be Happy (No, No, Nanette)
Two Gentlemen of Verona ..whatever they did.
Pippin
Over Here! (The Andrew Sisters).
Gypsy (Angela Lansbury).
Ballroom (Dorothy Loudon).
They're Playing Our Song (Klein/Arnaz).

Ooh, I saw the Ragtime clip a few weeks ago. It's pretty amazing. They got applause for this cool cluster shifting action between the Jews, black and whites. Pretty stunning.

Here in Chicago we are lucky to have a fabulous bar called "Sidetracks" where every Monday (among other times) the place is packed for "Showtune Night". The owners have an astounding collection of numbers collected from the Tonys, from videos, from Rosie O'Donnell shows, and other places too numerous to mention. It's heaven to see many of the numbers discussed here ("And I am Telling You" must be shown every week) up on a big screen, with hundreds of men singing along. If you ever get to town, be sure to check it out.

Neither Follies nor Two Gentlemen of Verona performed a number on the 1972 Tony Awards. At first, I thought it was due to that special "25 Years of Tony Award-winning musicals" show, but that one was in 1971, so I'm not sure what the deal was, exactly.

Pippin did "Magic to Do". Over Here did "Over Here" and "Charlie's Place". Angela Lansbury did perform "Everything's Coming Up Roses," but in more of a variety show type performance, not in costume and character as Rose, alas.
