I thought that the Le Miz was awful...the mike balance as well as most solo's off key was painful...
I do disagree with many of the Patti comments, I adore her.
Richard Kiley was magnificent -- to emote so much character while standing so still...perfection.
I wish that there was more of a showcase for Nell Carter and I agree that these were perfect performance to remember and preserve the greatness of Gregory HInes and Michael Jetter...

Posted: 8/10/04 at 12:25amWatching it for a fourth time since last night. I can't get enough. Richard Kiley was so wonderful. I never get goosebumps like that listening to someone sing. I am sad I never got to see him perform. (He also narrated the world premiere of A Tale of Two Cities. He said he hadn't been moved by a piece of theatre like that in years after the premiere.)

Posted: 8/10/04 at 1:38amI loved seeing the Les Mis piece, just to get the chance to see the OBC all up there together how they looked at that time. There was a bit of a sound issue, yes, but all in all I really enjoyed that.

i was a bit disappointed that Richard Kiley appeared to lip-synch "Impossible Dream"... but on the upside, Michael Jeter in Grand Hotel was AMAZING, as was Gregory Hines in Jelly's Last Jam and the Guys and Dolls segment...

Yes - I've waited for years to see Richard Kiley sing that song and it was very dissappointing to see him Lip Sync - but maybe he was not well (I almost had the feeling that he was mouthing to the original OBC...but I could be wrong)...it's interesting to me how acting styles have changed so much since that show was originally on Broadway. But I won't get into all that right now.
Wasn't Les Miz asful? so much off key singing...and such a bad sound mix...I'd have to agree that the most pleasant surprise of the evening was Michael Jeter - what a great performer - and Brent Barret was in fine voice. (We'd just seen Michael Jeter in The Green Mile and loved him in that - how versatile can a guy be?)

Posted: 8/10/04 at 9:36amThe beginning of the Les Miz performance was great. It all went downhill when whoever was playing Marius opened his mouth.

Posted: 8/10/04 at 10:58amHmmm I didn't notice at first because the picture was sort of fuzzy on the tape but now that you mention it, it does seem like he is lip-syncing. That is sad. Here is a thread from Broaday Lost Treasures I talking a little bit more about the lip-syncing back in the day. https://forum.broadwayworld.com/readmessage.cfm?thread=36169

Posted: 8/10/04 at 12:22pmMany of the numbers on the Alex Cohen-produced Tony Awards (1967-1986) featured lip-synching. Probably was not even Richard Kiley's choice in the matter. But there was an Ed Sullivan Broadway compilation tape where Kiley sang the number live, unless my eyes and ears are deceiving me. I'll have to take a close look at it again...

I was listening to Ave Q in the car and was paying particular attention to the instruments instead of the sung parts and during "If You Were Gay" I kept thinking of the clip from Lost Treasures with Michael Jeter.
One of my favorite clips of the show.

Posted: 8/10/04 at 2:15pmFor me, the spell was broken when it became apparent that many of these numbers were lip-synched. Watch Richard Kiley carefully...especially at the end. Updated On: 8/10/04 at 02:15 PM

Posted: 8/11/04 at 8:40amThe most frustrating thing about watching this show is realizing how much more time the nominated shows had to perform than they do now. It's really a shame that the current producers have made the decision to limit time for production numbers so severely.
