Just came back from a thrift store with a stack of cast recording vinyls that I'll probably end up hanging on my walls.
So I was wondering, for those a bit older than I, do you still keep your old records? Do you buy CDs of the records that you already own? And what do you do with those records then?
For me, although I've grown up in the CD/mp3 generation, records are special, mostly because of their size. They're perfect for decoration, and I love the booklets that (sometimes) come along. I got a Sondheim set today (Forum, Night Music, Company) and while it was a bit beat up, the real great part was the booklet that was included. Pictures of Sondheim growing up (some new to me) and an intensive intro about how he got into musical theatre. Librettos for all three musicals. And the best, lots of full color pictures from Company.

I got the great opportunity to find these gems in a thrift store a few weeks ago:
My Fair Lady OLC
Annie Get Your Gun
Porgy and Bess
South Pacific
They're going to be going up on my wall, for sure.

I still have a few hundred Lp's. Mostly as I get the CD I pull the Lp's and send them off to yard sales.
I have recently withdrawn the Lp versions of THE KING AND I (1964 Lincoln Centre), SOUTH PACIFIC (1967 Lincoln Center), CANDIDE (1973 revival) and MY FAIR LADY (1976 revival.)
I still have the Lp's of ANYA, ARABIAN NIGHTS, JIMMY, A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC (film cast), and others.
For years I collected 78 RPM show album sets, as well as 10" lp's. All that I still have are the 10-inchers.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Many of the LPs have foldouts and extensive documentation of the stage productions, but more and more the CDs with an insert book are better documented than the original album. There are many LPs with only the cover having any info about the show. There was no synopsis or evening a list of characters and who was playing which character. That rarely happens with the CD re-releases (and certainly not with CD releases) The CD releases even include the members of the orchestra, which never occurred on vinyl.
