The Lightning Thief goes after critics on twitter

Oct 29, 2019 — 6:01:32 PM

Fosse76: I was obviously referring to the producers. They shouldn't be paying people to attack the critics. But, should have known they had a bad show and tried to make a better one. AND NO, I was/am not suggesting they criticize the creative team publicly. They had plenty of time to judge for themselves the public reaction to their show and it was not good at any time in this process.

Musicals that you never tire of...

In The Heights (18), The Drowsy Chaperone (10), Les Miserables. (14)2 shows that probably fit that bill, but just aren't done enough to test me:Bonnie & Clyde (6), Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder (3)

The producers did the right thing to touring with the show first. They got a captive season ticket audience paying (virtually) full price. That is how I got roped in and we left at intermission. If the producers were paying attention during the tour they would have noticed people streaming out at intermission. Apparently there are some kids that came to see the show, but that demographic isn't one that drives Broadway sales. SpongeBob, even being a much higher quality show, was not able to su...

Favorite cast album for a show you have never seen?

Oct 29, 2019 — 3:23:03 PM

Listening to Lord of the Rings now. Much better than I remember it. Definitely more movie soundtrack like than musical. But, that stage show was done much more like a movie than a stage show. The set was pneumatic and could change in seconds, so there were what seemed like "movie" cuts in the action.

I have all those cast albums and will have to review. Mack & Mabel is a favorite. I got to see a wonderful production of Dear World. The set and costumes were all...

Best staging of a duet?

Oct 29, 2019 — 9:40:51 AM

Definitely a tip of the hat to "I'm Nothing Without You" - from City of Angels My two favorites: "You Can Do Better Than Him" from Bonnie & Clydehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkK9dwSYlmILily's Eyes - The Secret Gardenhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-RYHcyhLqkI know the question is about staging. But, these are the only videos I could find of a performance.

Have never heard of Venice. Will have to look into it.Chess used to be on this list, but have seen it 3 times in the last 4 yrs. All completely different shows, with different plots, different song order. Bridges of Madison County is definite a favorite to listen to, but was very disappointed by the national tour production, just a snooze. Have to get Far From Heaven back in my rotation.Wow! Lord of the Rings. Can't say that is near the top to listen to. Saw it in Toronto next to last perform...

Where do musicals go to die?

Oct 29, 2018 — 3:59:33 PM

So, a couple updates.October Sky is apparently bogged down in a court battle. Universal Pictures thought they bought the rights to the story on all platforms including for a musical stage version. The original author sold the rights again to someone else to make a musical. Now both are suing to be the only one to bring a musicalization to stage. Here Lies Love is one I left off my OP list. It apparently is being reconceived for a normal stage at Seattle Rep, with the plans on licensing in the ...

Apparently, Lavender Girl is available to license through John Bucchino's agent. It is still a short one-act.

Tag: Thanks for the heads up. Hadn't checked out the Mirvish season. I know Boy George's agent will take requests for licensing, but that sounds like only professional theaters will be considered.

Where do musicals go to die?

Oct 28, 2018 — 4:11:32 PM

I have been frustrated with the lack of information on musicals that just disappear. I know many I have seen have hopes of going to broadway at some point, so they don't have cast recordings and can't be licensed... October Sky, Ella Minnow Pea, Sousatzka, Hazel, Harmony, Tiny Dancer,...Some mysteries that I hope some of you can clear up.1. From 3hree, Flight of the Lawnchair Man split from Mice and Lavender Girl and is now available for license as a full 2 act. But, what happened to Mice and...

Friday Matinees

May 21, 2018 — 6:41:03 PM

I remember a few years ago, there were several shows that had Friday matinees after Memorial Day.I saw Beautiful on a Friday matinee.Playbill has a page with the weekly schedule of all broadway shows, but none list Friday matinees. Is that a thing of the past? Or is playbill behind on their schedule updates?

Pal Joey revival?

Dec 15, 2017 — 10:37:14 AM

About 4-5 years ago I saw a workshop of new Pay Joey in summer stock. It had a revised book and added several songs from the Rodgers & Hart library and removed a couple from the original. The plan at the time was to work it some more in LA, then put it on broadway. Not sure if this is the same script. The main change was to make Joey black and bi-sexual. Certainly heightened the stakes for character set in a pre-WWII era.
