lol, Marquise. I had a feeling you'd enjoy that part. She was FANTASTIC. Absolutely stunning. I HATE when people say this, but I seriously was a little like "Daphne Rubin-who?" afterwards. No disrespect to Daphne, I can't possibly pick a favorite of the two. But WOW. Rosario just GETS that role.
BroadwayGirl:
Haha, right. Which kind of leads me back to the picking and choosing to read reviews that you know will only please you. What's the purpose? It gives you no food for thought.
I did read your review, and sort of responded as best I could, but I know exactly why people don't want to read negative reviews. You don't want food for thought that you can't even digest yet. We're all really excited to see this movie, and so it's natural to want to go into it with a positive outlook and decide what we think based on that. I don't think that anyone WANTS to be let down by this movie, so what's the point of reading an obviously negative review before going into it? It's not as though anyone is using early reviews in this case to decide whether or not to see the movie...we're all seeing it, and so while it's good to be prepared, I personally don't want to delve too deeply into the negative aspects thave have been pointed out until after I see it and have judged for myself.
BG, not to sound smug or anything so I hope it doesn't come off this way but there was really no doubt in my mind that she was going to be able to pull off this role and make it her own. She is just right for that role.
I'm just so pissed that her "Goodbye, Love" hit the cutting room floor.
Otherwise I did read your whole review and I definitely respect your opinion. It was very well thought out and extremely well written. I'm sorry it didn't live up to your expectations.

Sweetestsiren: Amen! I feel exactly the same way. Though I'm trying to avoid all reviews, positive or negative, except to find out whether the person liked it or not. I just don't want to go into a movie knowing something specific that someone thinks is wrong with it and then being on the lookout for it so I can decide if I want to defend the decisions made or agree with the reviewer. I'd rather go into it not knowing exact details, and then after I've seen it I'll come back and read reviews and see whether or not these people share my thoughts.

Alright, I have something important to say and I don't care what you all think about it. Disagree, agree, I don't give any type of f*ck.
So, what I have to say is as simple as this. Take it as you want: I have a crush on Tracie Thoms. Thank you. Now who wants to start with me?

sweetestsiren and behind the spotlight, I see what you're saying...Wickdrent said that a little ealier on, and I can see where you're coming from. Totally understable, and I do recommend going into this without reading too much.
Marquise, I totally had faith in Rosario as well. I was just very thrilled to see her living up to my expectations.
BSo, Tracie's adorable. And she was another one who gave an amazing performance. I'm so glad I was at least thrilled with most of the cast. :)

BG: Thanks. :) I'll come back and read your review after I've seen it, and I'm sure there will be some things I agree with, and probably things I totally disagree with. I have some concerns of my own, I'd rather not add to that before I've even seen the thing! Could 9 days last *any* longer?
And yes, Tracie is absolutely adorable. When I first heard she was Joanne I was like "who the heck IS this person?" But from her blogs and the previews and the soundtrack, I think I, too, may be falling in love with this woman. <3

Meanwhile, I was watching Wonderfalls on DVD, and thought to myself, "She seems kind of Joanne-like... am I crazy?" Then I imdb'ed her. And she WAS Joanne!

I cannot recommend Wonderfalls highly enough! It was a TV show on Fox that only ran for four episodes or so, but the series was released in its entirety on DVD. It's about a girl, Jaye, who has sort of abandoned the way she was expected to live her life. Her family is fairly wealthy, and she's well-educated, but she chooses to live in a trailer park and work in a gift shop in Niagara Falls. Then, animals start to talk to her. Not real animals, but monkey bookends, stuffed bears, lawn ornament flamingos; things like that. Tracie plays Mahandra McGinty, Jaye's best friend. It's a large role... I think she appears in all, if not most, of the episodes. It's definitely a favourite of mine. I was just re-reading the quotes on imdb, and cracking up. SOOOO funny. PICK UP THE DVDS!! You won't regret it!

Welcome back, Anthony. It's great to see you posting again, even under not-so-great circumstances.
As someone who saw the movie and loved it, despite the minor flaws I won't deny, I urge everyone to go into it with as open a mind as possible. I'd be lying if I said it didn't bother me that so many people who have yet to see the film have such negative things to say about it. I know it's probably hard to go in completely unbiased, given all the reviews (both positive and negative) that most of you have probably read by now, but I think you should try. I really believe that if you go in thinking you'll hate it, you probably will.
Well, the moment of truth is coming for me soon. I have a couple of passes for tomorrow's Pittsburgh screening.

I think the hardest part of it for me is that I wanted the movie to be perfect. Going to a show preformed eight times a week there will always be flaws. One actor might be having a bad night or just bad in general, timing could be off, or the simple fact that the person sitting next to me is in a dire need of a shower. Not to say that I don’t love it every time and take away something new from the experience but I always wish for that one perfect show. In live theatre this will never happen, it’s part of its charm but from the start this is what I expected from the movie. Unreasonable? Most definitely, but I’m a perfectionist so what can I say. I wanted every line and note to be perfect just so that I could have something by which to always remember my favorite moments of the show. To some extent I honestly believed, and still believe, this to be possible. With the kind of budget given to the film and the ability to edit it frame by frame I hope that the final product is something those involved can look at and say “I wouldn’t change a thing.” If this is the case and I still find myself disappointed with the outcome then I can only chalk it up to difference in taste and accept that perhaps there is no perfect Rent and just hope that come a week from now I can walk away from the theatre without letting what I wanted the movie to be keep me from enjoying what it is.
kluane, I can't say I went in with the expectation of perfection, simply because I know that' unattainable, but I see where you're coming from. While in theatre, I don't know...Adam Pascal may crack on a bunch of notes (Ha), in film things can be ironed out because there's the opportuniy for numerous takes. Fortunately, I found most of the actors to be fine. The grander picture is what was messed with for me. And unfortunately, no number of takes would fix that. Just a better director and screenplay writer.
