~ The new set is MILES better than the past few years'. I LOVED the false proscenium
~ The most outstanding openeing in recent memory -- I LOVED the Dynamites, Radio, and Urchin inclusion
~ Hugh was divine host
~ Cheno in the bubble was HILARIOUS
~ Avenue Q stole the 'ensemble' perfoamces for me
~ Tonya Pinkins was the best solo performer on air
~ Phylicia Rashad was wonderful. I am happy she won... that woman is all class
~ Carol Channing needs to stay AWAY from rp
~ Not enough chorus boys -- where was my Barrett Foa and Tyler Hanes?!?
~Idina was fabulous when she won!
~ HUGE HUGE HUGE BRAVA to the company of Avenue Q!
~ All in all, one of the best Tony telecasts in the last 15 years if you ask me!

~ Tonya Pinkins was the best solo performer on air

You're kidding right? She sounded HORRIBLE.. I thought she was going to loose her voice completely. Maybe it sounded better on TV but sitting there watching it I saw people cringing like "Oh my gawd.."

I liked Bernadette Peter's "Rose's Turn" better that last night's "Lot's Wife"

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Unfortunately, I don't think TV improved the impression she was giving.

It wasn't her voice that stood out.. a performance ons tage is SOOOO much more than the voice.. if that is all you focused on, so be it.. But her intentensity was what grabbed me about her.... not her "voice".. I was going for overall.

Yeah I think that was the point- she was trying to make you focus on something else BESIDES her lost voice.

I agree, that voice quality is only a part of the whole - but honestly, without any context to the number, her "intensity" had virtually no effect on me personally. I could see she was emoting something, but it could have been anything - such as we witness with manufactured "Idol" performances. I also noticed that she basically just turned and walked offstage with barely any audience acknowledgement, which kind of indicated to me that she was not overly pleased herself with the performance.

Honestly, I just thought she looked like some trying really hard to perform through vocal problems. It wasn't well sung and she seemed distracted by that.

She didn't acknowledge the audience?? Um.. yeah she did.. when she ended the song, she took her bow and all, and THEN walked off.... but hell, most of the time, as soon as the numbers ened, the cameras cut away... barely ANYONE performing was shown bowing to the audience or anything

I sorta thought she was trying to channel Jennifer Holiday

I didn't see the Tony's, but I just thought I'd say although I think perhaps Wicked should have got best musical, I definitely agree with Best Original Score - because that's what it is.. ORIGINAL. Wicked is not 'original' as in 'well I've never heard anything like this before'..

Highlights---Hugh, for many reasons, but mostly for his ease on stage, wit and singing "C'mon, big baby, c'mon" in the opening number. Deb is a lucky lady, as Rod said.

Idina winning and Taye's delight for her.
(Mine too!)
The hope--which later came true--that Avenue Q could win for Best Musical after winning Best score and book.

And..best of all..seeing Nathan Lane's mouth open wide to say "AAAAAAAAAAvenue Q", knowing no way would his mouth open up in that way if he were saying "Wicked." (Which I liked, just not as much as AQ.)

Nathan Lane and SJP did a great job presenting together. I loved the Hugh comment SJP made.

We tried that with Adam and you weren't home when he arrived and they sent him back. Maybe you shouldn't hang out at Internet cafes and be home to get your packages!! HAHA

I agree with Broadway, even though I think Donna deserves that.

Tonya's character is so frustrated, angry and sad all at the same time. Of course you would choke up if you felt these emotions. I do think that some of the notes could have been a little bit more on, but her "performance," not just her voice, was amazing.

As I said in the other thread, Pinkins' in context is phenomenal, it didn't work as a random 11 o'clock number.
