The Lost Treasures people want to include it, but John Breglio, executor of the Bennett estate will not grant the rights for them to do so. I believe it's because he feels it's too important a part of the Bennett legacy to just be heaped in with a lot of other random clips. When he decides to allow it to be shown, chances are it'll be in a context more specific to Bennett and Bennett alone -- perhaps a documentary on him or possibly an extra feature on the DVD of the Dreamgirls film (though that's unlikely since they're not recreating Bennett's choreography).
Breglio, Bob Avian and David Geffen were all extremely close to Bennett during his life and are fiercely protective of how his legacy is presented. After the fiasco of the film of A Chorus Line, Geffen and Breglio became especially guarded when it came to Dreamgirls -- Bennett's only other masterpiece (not counting his work on Follies, Company et al). That's why so many tried and failed to get the rights to make the Dreamgirls film over the years. Condon has the green light, but you can be sure that Geffen will be looking at the dailies throughout the filming.
The Dreamgirls Tony clip will surface in one form or another at some point, but don't hold your breath.

Visit Splash Bar on Musical Mondays. You're guaranteed to witness Jennifer Holiday 'telling you' at least twice in an evening. Along with Diana Ross & Michael Jackson easing on down the road.

Posted: 8/9/05 at 2:55pmJohn Breglio is also very protective of the DREAMGIRLS archival video at Lincoln Center. A friend inquired and was told by the library that Breglio is the only person who grants permission.

Posted: 8/9/05 at 3:04pmYes, you have to have written permission from Breglio to see the tape from Lincoln Center and he only grants it to professionals who can prove an affiliation to an Equity production of the show. In other words, he says no to 90% of the requests.

I've played that clip so much, I'm on my 3rd backup videotape.
Jennifer Holiday is amazing but so is Loretta Devine saying, "Well, it's between me too!"
