2 Thumbs Up
I said I would actually go see the show before forming an opinion about this woman who made my ears hurt on the website. I hated the movie "Life Aquatic" for so long but then I went and saw it and liked it so I'm doing less prejudgements. This is a cute little show. I think the "Sutton" is fine. I didn't find anything to rave about but she didn't disgust me. I think her voice is very ordinary. But, does anyone else notice anythign unusual about her vibrato. That can be a little annoying sometimes. A high note at the end of the song closing the first act she sounded like she struggled with. It was not all there and it was unfortunate to hear. That's all though. The most annoying singer in the show ended up being the unfortunate gentleman who played Laure. I thought he had that typical cliche Broadway gay tenor voice with the back of the throat vibrato that I am just so tired of hearing. I loved the design of the show. It may have been a little long though. Good job I thought.

Posted: 1/26/05 at 6:17pmI agree about Laurie...disagree about Sutton, but maybe she had it when I saw the show, or maybe I just didn't notice it. I totally feel the same way with Laurie, but I guess they were going for "classic" with him. The one who got on my nerves the most was Amy McAlexander...her voice was so obnoxious, can we say Shirley Temple? And I was incredibly to surprised that her voice is pretty much like that when she talks in real life, I just thought she was putting it on the play younger.

Posted: 1/26/05 at 6:24pmShe spoke every consonant so hard that it just got annoying. Why are musical theatre people obsessed with spitting out these consonants? The idea is to understand the word spoken without actually hearing sounds stick out.

Posted: 1/26/05 at 7:18pmYou can call her Sutton without the quotation marks. I'm pretty sure she's a real person.

I hate that tenor voice with the back of throat vibrato!
AHHH!
Hopefully it won't bother me too much when I see it.

Posted: 1/26/05 at 9:45pmI found they ALL hit their "t"s and "d"s especially hard. It was annoying. Obviously a directorial choice.

Posted: 1/26/05 at 9:49pmWhen I saw Snoopy and Millie, Sutton didn't do that. I'm happy you like her better. I still can't wait to see the show!

Posted: 1/26/05 at 9:52pmThe show really is terrific...if we all listened to every review that was ever put out, we would miss a whole lot of great stuff.

Posted: 1/26/05 at 9:57pmyou can tell the entire show was speech-coached to death. listen to Jo in act one -- her diction is obnoxiously and noticably clear.

Yes, glad I was not the only one hwo notices the obnoxious overdone diction.
I also thought the music was unimpressive. Is it typical for an unknown composer? It was just kind of "ugh."

The weird vibrato you hear in Sutton's voice is called a wobble. It's what happens when the vibrato does not come from the appropiate resonating chambers in the face -- but from the throat. Unfortunately, the presence of the wobble could cut her singing career short, because the strain on the vocal cords is quite harsh. I'm sure she's working with a voice coach, so I'm surprised that I heard the wobble (and that someone else didn't catch it and stop her). Or, it could be the reason that they are increasing her mic levels instead of allowing her voice to naturally crescendo.
And I agree -- Amy is horrific

Eddie Cantor would tell Sutton to pull back. She's got more tics than Timex.
In my mind she makes all the wrong choices in Little Women.

Posted: 1/27/05 at 10:25amHmm Macy, I've always found Sutton's voice to be very forward, and resonates well in the chambers of the face. It's mix-y without sounding extremely mix-y, if that makes any sense. But I haven't heard much from Little Women, so I don't know about in this show. In Millie, I thought it sounded very healthy. Maybe these songs are way out of her range.

On the Broadway.com video when she talks I just want to reach in and slap her. Hearing her sing definetly isn't something I'm looking forward to

bronx will all due "respect" u can drop the quotation marks around sutton's name bro, she's a real person, not a character...
#19re: Bronx braves an afternoon of . . . the 'Sutton'
Posted: 1/27/05 at 11:39amBronx: Lose the quotations around "Sutton". Calling her "Sutton" and "this Sutton person" is really condescending. Like someone said earlier, I'm sure she is a real person.

Posted: 1/27/05 at 11:51amHere's my question: Does she always have one eyebrow an inch higher than the other, or does that only happen when she smiles? I see it in every photo of her. Is it some sort of facial paralysis?
#22re: Bronx braves an afternoon of . . . the 'Sutton'
Posted: 1/27/05 at 11:56amwell to hear tell the story, hunter used to beat the cr@p outta her when they were kids. hence the facial defect. Updated On: 1/27/05 at 11:56 AM

Lol -- I noticed the eyebrown thing too! Weird. Maybe someone told her to do that.
Blair -- As for the mix-yness of her voice in "Millie", I do know what you're talking about. On the recording, she has some nice transitions between her head an chest voice, but I have to say that in Little Women, that mix-yness is not as present.
